PostPosted: 13:38 - 08 Apr 2006    Post subject: Message From Andy's Dad Reply with quote

We bumped into Andy's Dad at the hospital on Wednesday evening and he said he had posted a message on the Boxhill forum. I told him I'd copy it over here for him.

Thanks for all the contact and concern shown

Especial thanks to those riding with Andy who showed him care at the scene and stayed 5 hours at the hospital

Andy is now out of danger and is in Cookson Divas Orthopaedic ward in Conquest Hospital, Hastings. Visiting is 2.30pm - 8pm daily and I know Andy would love to see his friends

He has an uphill battle to get back to walking - Pelvis is broken in 4 places, arm (right) in 2 places, 2 broken ribs and a deflated lung

Mike ( Andy's Dad)

Yikes, must be a right bitch going for a shit with a chest drain, a broken arm and a shattered pelvis. Feel sorry for the poor guy.

The big nonce just had to go better than me, and break other things, eh?!

My 5 minutes of fame and he ruins it!

I'm definitely looking at getting down there to see the guy, he doesn't know me from Adam, but as you say, I've a certain amount of insight into your pelvis being strewn around your insides!

I have to admit, seeing the pic of him lying in the road brought a few memories flooding back.

I'm on nights from next thursday, so it's going to get tricky working out a day I can pop down, but it'd be good to meet up with anyone that's around as well. Wednesday might be a possibility?

Try and make sure he gets a right bastard of a physio who'll push him all the way.

This advice is from the experience of a work colleague who broke his leg while in the RAF. Was put in a NHS ward next to a guy with the same injury. They struck up a friendship and keep in touch. Other guy had NHS physio and now walks with a limp. My colleague had the forces people do his rehab and didn't have any problems.

Hope Andy makes a full recovery.
Best wishes

Thumbs Up

I've literally just got back from the hospital, he's a lot more with it now, seems mainly to be fighting boredom.

Had quite a long chat, he's first question was what should he get to replace the SV Laughing

It'll be impossible to tell how he'll recover until he has his operation and the surgeons/physios decide things like how much weight his pelvis can bear, etc.

He's a young guy, we bounce back quickly, and being determined is half the battle. All I could think of was being able to walk to the toilet and take a dump under my own steam. They estimated 6-9 days till I could walk with crutches, it took 2. Pain was an irrelevance - it was a matter of pride and dignity.

I'm willing to bet that Andy, being even younger than me, is going to be even less willing to put up with the inconvenience of being a cripple - and that's what will get him up and about.

The physios just show you how, you've got to want to do it.

It'll be a pneumothorax like i had, they don't suck any mush out. If they can't aspirate it, and keep it inflated then they'll give him a chest drain, and wait a week before deciding to operate. If they do operate, it's a kephole affair with 3 incisions into the thoracic cavity. They agitate the inner wall of the chest to make it bleed, then use the blood as a glue to hold up the lung. If this fails, they'll cut a smiley face into his side and whip out the rib spreaders. Not nice at all.
