Melted petrol tank

I got a mini moto for quite a good price today but it has a fault, a hole in the petrol tank, it is made from plastic, any ideas how to fix it? I know it can be plastic welded but I need a way to do it at home and preferably for free Smile

Epoxy putty, £3.50 from Wilkos or £4 from B&Q.

It doesn't say on the packet that it's petrol proof, but it is. This was suggested to me by someone of the ratbikezone forum when I asked about sealing up a petrol tank, and it's really done the trick.

Looks like a soft nylon type plastic, can be a pig to "weld" compared to the harder types like ABS plastic. It keeps the heat more and you can blow a hole in it if you're not careful plus plastic welding is mainly for cracked panels not filling in holes. Best bet is as above, clean it up round the hole and use an epoxy resin to fill it in.

Fiberglass over it, which is fine for petrol

How did it come to be melted like that?? I really hope it wasn't the exhaust pipe that did that??

I've applied epoxy on a hole on my engine side casing (no contact with oil or petrol). So far so good. Maplin sell a variety of epoxy glues for steel, plastic etc.

Plastex is more expensive but its pretty good, guess its more for external panel repair.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated! I'll try some epoxy resin tomorrow, we have some at work.

Picture this, a pretty much brand new bike, they rode it about a bit, done a wheely and fell off the back thus hitting the exhaust pipe and bending it just over the engine, it burnt a hole in the tank so I swapped it for a £30 paintball gun. Very Happy

Assuming he uses the petrol proof variety & not the usual kind... but f/g isn't going to bond very well with that plastic...
