Dear Auntie BCF,

I'm trying to buy a flat in London. I've just found out that the insurance on my bike is likely to be about 2k if I leave it on the road!! I wont find a property with a garage. I really don't want to sell my bike, and I can't afford 2k for insurance, and it would probably get nicked if I left it on the road. I'm a bit stuck what to do Confused

Cheers

2K F*ck me!

Don't forget that if it isn't alarmed the insurance company prob won't pay out if it does get nicked.

Stay out of London. Thumbs Up Very Happy

bring the bike into the house? (I've seen people keep planks indoors and ride up quite long planks up steps on their door steps to do this,

or look for on of those council lockups / self serve storage units you can usually get away with £5-10 a week for a piano sized space which might be big enough for a bike.

Still thats £520 parking for a year which is kind of high.

If the place you would be living in has a space large enough, consider a bike storage shed, which go for around £800. It counts as a locked garage, AFAIK.

In your position I'd sell the bike and buy something old and tatty that is unlikely to get nicked, and keep it chained to a lamppost using an Almax chain and Squire padlock. Should be cheaper to insure as well.

Keep the bike at your parent's / friend's / relatives place within a reasonable commuting distance, where insurance is cheap, and take public transport to get there when you feel like a ride. Get a bicycle for city use. Alternatively, see if you can share a lock up garage with a few other bikers.

tbh it's probably just as likely to get nicked in London.
