Have you run the network setup wizard on both machines? It usually solves many of the connection problems.

Try disabling norton internet security completely. I set my norton to accept the local network connection but I would get that error when trying to connect to another PC

the error reads as follows: 'Home is not accessible. You might not have permmission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of workgroup computers is currently unavailable'

Thats what the error window reads every time i click view workgroup computers.

I meant with the network setup wizard. What error does that come up with? I reckon this is the cause as the permissions have not been set right on the main computer.

Run connection wizard on the laptop again. Do you still have the problem?

Cool. My first post and I might be able to help someone.

Are you running Windows XP on either machine ?
It sounds like a problem with one of the machines using simple file sharing which forces it to the guest account to connect even though the guest account may be disabled.
Try opening My Computer go to Tools.... Folder Options then click the View tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list that appears and you see an option about Simple File Sharing. Take the tick out of this box. If both machines are on XP do this on both then try accessing some network files.

Are the user accounts on each machine passworded or is the password blank ?
Again if you're on XP try connecting to a network drive from DOS.
Start.. Run ..... type cmd and click OK.
Now you need the IP address and the administrator username and password for the other machine.

Type net use \\<ip of other machine>\ipc$ /USER:administrator

This should create an admin connection without actually opening any files. It will ask you for the password associated with the admin account. This needs to be the username and password of the machine you are connecting to. If this says the connection was successful then you've done it OK and should then be able to browse to a network resource on the other PC. In Start...Run try typing \\<ip address>\c$ and seeing if it'll let you access the admin share on the PC.
If it throws back an error when you do the net use command above then it's likely your username and/or password is wrong.

Sorry if any of that is a bit patronising. You never know the level of someones knowledge when you're doing stuff like this so I'm trying to be clear.

Hope it helps and by the way - HI I'm new Smile

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled?

Possibly turn off simple file sharing.

Try some solutions from Google

Still sounds like simple file sharing is turned on.
If you go to Start.... Run .. and type \\<ip address of other machine> what happens ?
Do you get a login box appearing ?
Do you get an error ?
If you get a login box is the username box greyed out ?

Could you let us know the operating system on each machine involved ?
Are the IP addresses static or are they assigned via DHCP ?
Do the user accounts on each machine have passwords or are the passwords blank ?
When you tried \\<ip of other machine>\ipc$ /USER:administrator what happened ?
Might be able to help if you explain what's happening or not happening along with any error messages you get and what you're doing when you get them.
Like I said the only time I've ever seen this problem is when Simple File Sharing is on in XP, the username or password is wrong when you're connecting to the other PC or one I never thought of - if one machine is Windows 98 and you haven't installed the File & Print Sharing option in Network Properties.
