First proper post and first proper crash Very Happy

(Long story, sorry about that Wink )

Normally I use a very straight forward route from work via a dual carriage way because it's easier, but today I decided to try what is technically the shorter (and, as it turns out, also more interesting) route.

Well, long story short, I was coming up to a corner (from the right on that map) at about 50mph, but realised that was too fast, slowed down a bit and went in. About half way through I realised I'd misjudged it, and this is where I messed up: I tried to brake (despite being told not to more times than I care to remember now), rather then lean in a bit further. For about half a second I was hopeful until I saw the kerb approaching. When I eventually hit it, I was probably doing around 30mph still, skidded for a short bit, then it gets a bit blurry with vague memories of tumbling a bit. The next thing I recall was getting up, stumbling around and trying to get the bike off the road (still a bit fuzzy Confused). I checked my arms and ribs (legs felt fine) to make sure nothing was cracked, and it seems luck had been with me Karma . I had a few scratches, but was otherwise unharmed (really quite lucky - there are a few trees around there I could've hit)

A car driver had stopped and came over to make sure I was alright (big Thumbs Up to him), helped me drag the bike off the road, stayed with me for short while until I could assure him I was fine, offered me his phone (fortunately, I had my own) and pointed me the way to the nearest safe place to push the bike to (a pub just around a few corners). We tried starting the bike, but it was dead (the starter button made no noise what so ever, and this thing doesn't have a kick start).

He drove off eventually after I assured him I'd be alright, and I started pushing. Barely a few dozen yards down the road, another biker chap came past, saw me and immediately stopped to make sure I was alright and asking whether there was anything he could do to help. I'd heard about that sort of thing happening, but I was really chuffed none the less Smile. I explained that I had a phone and was covered for recovery etc., he explained the way to the pub again and wished me well before leaving off again. Another big Thumbs Up to him.

I got to the pub eventually, and the starter still did nothing. I checked through any visible wires to make sure they hadn't just come lose, but since they all looked fine I called the recovery people, who eventually turned up (it was one of these). The bloke (who would've fitted right in at a metal concert Smile ) checked through the fuses, nudged this and that, tried the starter button a few times without any luck and... eventually just put it into neutral. It started without a hitch Embarassed Doh! Suffice it to say I felt like a right pillock. I rode it 'round the car park a bit to make sure it was going straight, but it seemed fine.

The lesson from all this: sometimes when it says "SLOW" on the road and there are arrows indicating a sharp bend they actually mean it and, for the love of god, do not brake mid corner.

Off to clean the crap out of the chain now Wink

(Edit: Fixing typoes etc)

99% of bikes have a safety cut out, so won't start if the bike is in gear, sometimes you need to pull the clutch in to start too.

Still I guess you know that now... Wink

Glad to hear you weren't hurt and your bike is ok, just take it as part of the learning experience, it never ends! Thumbs Up

Good to hear its only the prides that damaged.

Gonna check the little green light before calling for a recovery again Wink

My bike broke down on a major A road once, the recovery people were called out and somehow I had managed to loose the disc lock key in the meanwhile.

For 10 minutes we were trying to get the damn bike off of the gravel and dirt with the front wheel locked. The little trolley they had had a buckled wheel so was completely useless.

I had to move my car, and low and behold on the mat of the car was the disc lock key Embarassed

I was embarressed enough that my bike had broken down, but to struggle for god knows how long Rolling Eyes

I think this is truly one of those things you have to find out for yourself. You only make this mistake once, the memory stays with you.

I know I only ride a scoot but when I first got it I overshot many corners and came close to hitting the kerb a few times because id mis-judged.. Needless to say I ride a lot more carefully now.. Guess you learned the hard way.. Neutral Good thing you came out alright tho. Wouldve maybe been a whole different story had you not slowed down a bit though.

I am with the same recovery people as part of my insurance and they are ace. It is really nice to actually have a company that only deals with bikers. I will probably stick with my insurance company for that reason.

Yea unlucky bud but better to learn your lesson without breaking bones in the process. I did the same thing a few weeks back on what I thought was a gentle bend and just missed the kerb travelling about 60 which was definitely an eye-opener. It does take a lot of effort at first to avoid instinctively braking but it will come. Regarding your bike not starting, the engine probably flooded when it went over. My bike was knocked over off the stand the other day Evil or Very Mad and the same thing happened.

Jok

Good to hear you're ok.

Now make sure this spill makes you a better rider. Karma

Nice to hear others stopped to help (not all cagers are bad Very Happy ). Pay back the compliment when you can - nine times out of ten taking 30secs out of your time will result in finding out your help is not needed, but we all appreciate that one time when we need assistance.

Ride safe.

my bro done this twice on his scoot. he always tries takig corners to quick and cos its a scoot he obviously cant lean as far as me on a bike. suffice to say he hit the curb both times and he slid down road and bike somersaulted. i shit myself cos i was behind him. 1st time my dad was in front on his ninja and the scoot only just missed him. glad you and bike ok anyway.

Agreed, I had to learn the hard way, along with the lesson about riding in wet weather. Once learned you'll never forget! Good that your not hurt.

Glad your OK Jok and the bike just has a few "battle scars"

The guy that turned up to you is what we tend to call "a biker" lol...No it wasn't me but my work partner...lol... Laughing Laughing

It is a nasty corner there in Kelham and definately a "SLOW" corner normally due to oncoming lorries taking a wide berth....

He wasn't scary in the least -- quiet the opposite in fact. He even tried to make me feel better about my daftness by trying to come up with stories of other people who were even sillier... you could tell he was struggling, blessum Wink.

Front light seems to be a bit mis-aligned (aiming too high) and the chain, sprockets and rear wheel needed a good scrubbing to get all the dirt out, but nothing else has surfaced so far (it's done about 200m since). The next regular service is due anyway, so hopefully anything I've missed will get ironed out then.

Hopefully that's the way it'll stay from now on Smile. I've certainly learned to pay more attention to the road ahead of me.
