Right foot on the brake?

Yes, I believe so.

It's good practice to do it anyway, really.

hmm..cheers G.

i tend to sit with the clutch in too... i've read through loads of 'my test' threads but this hasn't come up really...

bad too?

i sort of figure that if anyone is going to mow me down from behind i'll have a fighting chance to get out of the way...

I've never done it the other way.

In fact, trying to makes me feel weird.

Probably because I've been doing the Hendon Shuffle since I started riding.

I clutch on first gear if I know the lights are going to change soon, if I'm waiting for a while I'll whack it in neutral and wait. I think this is correct.

Was always told right foot on break, left foot down. On my test I remained in gear at lights, clutch in, yes you are supposed to be in neutral but the instructor could not see anyway, I passed Thumbs Up

Left foot down, right foot up to cover the rear brake, first gear already selected before stopping and clutch in when stopped, unless I'm going to be stopped for a little while, then I'll put it in neutral and put both feet down.

Almost, I was told to always keep the foot on the brake. If a car hits from behind your front wheel could go into the air leaving the front brake useless.

The only probelm I found with keeping the right foot over the brake is when its really windy at junctions traffic lights

I tend to just put both feet down unless I'm stopped for a while then I put my right foot onto the brake.

You can allways have a brake coverd if you are capable of using the throttle and front brake at the same time. this is an essential skill for blipping the throttle on the down shift, or for hill starts where both feet are needed on the ground (fidgety pillion/heavy bike)

As a general rule i think about what side traffic is likely to pass me on. this is normally on the right hand side, so i put my left foot down.
Ifwaiting to turn right i will often put my right foot down so that i still have an ankle should something pass too close. Laughing

At the end of the day when riding in the real world its best to do what is safest and what you find easiest to manage. But on your test i advise the left foot down aproach at all times.

Basically...if u hold the front brake in..and u get hit from behind..u will do a 180' flip...as if u hold the rear brake..u won't..apparantly Rolling Eyes

I always do right foot down. Due to the awkward location of my back brake, i never use it. I can't honestly remember the last time i did. Plus its easier to knock it into gear and ride off. Hill starts with the front brake are easy anyway, and as NC30UK said, i always blip the throttle on a downshift.

I nearly always sit with right foot on back brake at lights, as G said it is a good thing to get used to doing.

This is correct and it is what I do, you only do it the other way round (left foot up, right foot down) if your on a super fast bike and want to blitz away from the lights so fast that bringing your foot from the floor to the gear change would take too much time to get into second.
