When i first started out biking, I sought every bit of advice i could find..........................

Some of it was useful, most of it was tripe.

The worst bit of advice I had was to check the left hand mirror while turning left / cornering to make sure nowt is coming.
Ok so when turning into a left hand road fair enough, but mid corner whilst your cranked over? Shocked

I soon found this was highly deadly.

When i did my first CBT, the retard instructor told me to always have all my fingers on both the brake and clutch at the same time. I found it makes riding very difficult, but it's so you can brake quickly if your caught out apparently? Muppet Rolling Eyes

The other thing he told me was to never have my pony tail hanging out the back of my helmet, and to always keep it tucked in my jacket. This was because people would see i was a woman and then take advantage, or try to knock me off on purpose?! WTF? Shocked

CBT:

Arrow If you have no leathers, wear 2 pairs of jeans, not the most practical in the summer Confused

Arrow If raining, wear a pair of plastic / latex golves to make your gloves waterproof, not sure how hand will stay dry with all the sweat that is produced

DAS

Arrow If going around a tight corner, slip the clutch. So free wheeling around a corner is a safe thing to do Confused

ALWAYS or all the time in heavy traffic? It is a good idea to keep the front brake covered in heavy traffic. Probably not the thing to be teaching you on your CBT though.

Since when has knocking women off bikes become a sport?? Shocked

Your instructer sounded like a knobber to say the least, what type of comment was that?? was he trying to make you not want to ride?

He was indeed a knob, and because of him i didn't get on a bike after my CBT for over a year. I took my first CBT in November 2004! Crying or Very sad

Fortunately though, thanks to the help of A.R.T. in Southampton, i re-took my CBT this January. They were so helpful and supportive and brilliant instructors. They were really patient with me as well seeing as i was a bundle of nerves, and fully expecting a repeat performance! I'm eternally grateful to them as i now have so much fun on my DT Thumbs Up

Also one bloke advised that i put my bike on a paddock stand and start the engine and knock it into gear, and let the back tire turn freely.

Get a house brick and hold it against the new tire to scrub it in.

Now i can see the benefit of scrubbing a tire in like this, means you dont risk yourself on a new tyre. but is this not dangerous?? new bike can come off stand etc etc?

From junction27.org.uk

Scrubbing a tyre is only about roughing the surface up to improve traction. But don't do this with sandpaper, some people do, but the tyre manufactuer's will advise you that this is both unethical and does not increase the grip in your tyre. You have to ride it to make it work!

I was told to avoid drain/manhole covers even going over em straight.. That lead to me constantly watching the tarmac directly 10 foot infront and not the road ahead and constantly weaving everywhere like im in some kind of computer game...

They aint that bad unless they are wet, and even then they are alright if you dont go over one mid corner. Thats what ive found riding on a shitty scoot anyways.

Good advice. Slipping the clutch does not mean pull it all the way in - just partially to control the speed. It's smoother than using the throttle at low speed.

I was told to treat the clutch like a man's balls and squeeze it gently, at my CBT. My dad was standing next to me at the time.

Probably not the worst advice just a little ill thought out.

i was told to avoid the paint markings on the road in the wet.

I was also told that having a 50 Scrambler ( Derbi Senda ) was a waste of money and i should buy something like a speedfight.

I Was also told that geared bikes were 'Slow' Belive it or not.

65 on the speedo maybe Razz

Avoid them best you can, there extra slippery when wet. leaning/braking to much on them could be nasty Neutral

Not really advice but during my cbt I was told..

''this son, is where we find out if your gay" Confused

looking positively confused, the instructor then went on to say..

"woman, cannot and I mean cannot do figure of eight turns, so we're now gonna find out if you have a touch of the feminine side"

obviosuly I aced it. Thumbs Up

Ive had my speedfight 6 months and im bored of it already.... Thats probably another piece of bad advice I was told... buying a scoot Rolling Eyes 60mph tops is not enough to be honest.

I wished I had learned on a geared bike but I choosed to learn on a scoot because at the time I was offered one cheap. Now im taking my full licence and still a little iffy on the gears because im used to a scoot Sad I got my test in 5 days and 3 lessons left Neutral Neutral

Worse piece of advice? " get a 125 4 stroke supermoto you'll have loads of fun" yeh it was for a while but now i just glare in envy at the 2 stroke race reps. Although its low maintainance and dont have to buy 2 stroke oil. But its so slow. Still suppose ive got plenty of time for faster bikes.
