Just got stopped and given a ticket. For riding my bike on the pavement (pushbike).

I was cycling on the pavement through hounslow west as that section of road is always manic. the idiot driver capital of britian, this section of road is as I was appraoching a busy junction.

Anway cycling along at a very slow snail pace, just sort of drifting with hardly no pedestrians about. when I start hearing someone bibbing their horns, it turns out to be a grey astra with a an old man hanging out his windows shouting at me agressively to get of the pavement. I thought fuckoff and carried on cycling (nearly gave him the finger).
a few moments on and i can hear more beeping and this guy has turned round and is telling me to stop and pullover. I then notice the small blue sticker on the pasenger door saying metropolitan police. I think fuck. pullover and put my bike at rest. whilst 2 community officers jump out the car, while the old guy is shouting stop him, get his bike.
I was already standing off the bike with my hands in my pocket with the pushbike leaning against a a wall. Rolling Eyes
the old guy steps out the car and he's a real police officer who then proceeds to lecture me that i'm breaking a road traffic act and because I didnt take notice of his first warning, he's issuing me a ticket.

Anyway they issued me a ticket for £30 the road act 508. and got my details but I had no ID so they were telling me I would be arrested if I didnt have no ID. I managed to stop that from happening as I checked my bag for anything but couldnt find anything and I think me not making a fuss and being co-operative settled them down.

Anyway they got my details, gave me a white bit of paper and lectured me how I shouldnt be riding on the road and left.

Now my question is I was told that I could take it too court, if I do would my reason for not stopping save me from the fine.
Also I got home and noticed that I didnt give them my current full address properly because I havent been living at my current address very long at all. they didnt ID could I blag my way out of it by saying it wasnt me?

I know you do the crime, you do the time and all that but this sort of take the piss.

police wonder why they dont get respect, yes I know they arent all dickheads.

Tuff luck there Thumbs Down

Surely the car should have flashed the blues and twos to get your attention, not shouting and gesticulations Eh?

Did the area have signs up to state that the area was 'No Cycling'?

Would be tempted to write a letter complaining about their attitude, sending it to the local MP and some big person from the appropriate police station.

Tossers Thumbs Down

Discretion is the word here. Bimbling along when there's no-one about is a bit different to tearing along a crowded pavement which deserves a ticket.

it was a normal roadcar with just a sticker on the side. no sirens or anything. the thing is the community officers were smirking about the situation and the guy writing the ticket wrote the wrong name but i corrected him coz I thought the old guy was gonna do a radio check.

yeah does anyone know for certain if can get get out of this because of the ID issue?

Jesus! the police can be so pathetic sometimes. I would definitely log a formal complaint against the officer shouting out of the car at you!

Report the fecker for inappropriate use of a horn, also for not being in proper control of the vehicle (hanging out the window). Also demand to see the check log of the vehicle he was driving, all police vehicles must be checked and logged every day.

Make it too much hassle for them to procede Thumbs Up

Hi

Legally they can do you for it. No different to doing you for any other offence. Unless it is specifically a cycle path then you are not allowed to cycle on the pavement.

There has been talk about clamping down on it due to lots of complaints. However bit different doing someone for cycling slowly on a quiet pavement rather than agressively through a crowded pavement.

By the way, no ID is not an offence. They can detain you, but it would seem dubious that they could detain you if you have supplied details that they can verify.

All the best

Keith

Complain the reason why you didnt stop was because you have heard of bogus policemen asking cyclists to stop and empounding there bike so you were afraid you were going to have yours nicked too. Im sure there are many excuses you could come up with but ultimately I wouldnt even let it worry you until you get a court summons. I would attend the court representing yourself, and without doubt the ticket will be quashed due to it costing a stack to claim for unpaid tickets BUT you must tick the box to say you WILL be attending!

I say leave it until you hear more because it already sound suspect anyway due to ID, the way the stopped you, issue of ticket etc etc.

I think he got the ticket for cycling on the pavement rather than for not stopping, with the implication that he would have been let off with a warning had he stopped immediately.

This being the case, you are bang to rights. The simple fact is that you should no more have been cycling down the pavement than I should be riding my motorbike down it.

I presume the policeman was in uniform?

As far as I am aware, you could be given points on your driving licence too, you can for running a red light on your push bike. Might be worth checking this out and bearing it in mind if you decide to refuse the fixed penalty notice and take it to court.
