things that make insurance cheaper:

the bike

your age

your licence

your sex

where you live (yes, even for TPO it seems)

your No Claims Bonus

Where did you get the quote from? Cos you need to get MCN and ring *EVERY* insurance company listed, as the quotes will vary wildly from one to another.

Excuse the above sarcasm. Cheapest insurance comes to the cheapest bikes.

When I've enquired about upgrading my bike from 125-500 there is no real difference in price as long as the value of bike is the same.

You need to shop around.
A mito wont be any cheaper than an NSR and that quote's waaaay to high.
try www.insurance2000.co.uk

I think this is because you can make claims on vandalism to your bike. for example some twat decides to push it over out side your house. u can claim for damages.

I bet I'm wrong and someone corrects me! but it all who insures you?

I think the Mito is going to be a fair bit more on insurence than the NSR...

Its rarer, Faster, More desirable, parts are difficult to get.

Cagiva is only £50 more insurance..

i just got a quote from insurance2000.co.uk and it seems that third party fire and theft is what costs the most?

For instance it costs £650 a year without TPFT, but with it it costs an extra £1000 do I really need TPFT??

Too true, Italian bikes are generally more expensive than the Japs. Usually down to part prices. Long time ago now, but my first bike was an Aprilia AF1, quote was for £222 TPFT, went out and put the deposit down, phoned back insurance to go ahead with the insurance and they told me that they had made a mistake. Quoted me for a Yamaha, the quote on the Aprilia was exactly double at £444. Too late, I'd put down a none refundable deposit!

Thats far too much to be paying for your insurance!

I paid £1050 FC for an NSR @ 17 Confused And about £30 more to be a ZX6R TPFT Smile

If it's TPO then you can't claim anything for anything. TPO is the minumum meaning that if you damage someone else's vehicle, they can claim against you. You, on the other hand, are fucked.

I reckon it's down to the likelyhood of you hitting something. I was getting TPO car quotes and if I said I lived in Central London it was way way higher than the rates I had been paying (same insurer) in Aberdeen. But if you think about it... you're more likely to crash into someone (and thus be claimed against) in a busy city than in a quiet town.

TPO is all you LEGALLY need.

But if you want the hope of getting some money if someone steals you bike, then its TPFT you want.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Don't forget mileage! On the same principle as the location factor, the more miles you do each year, the chances of hitting something increases (or so goes the theory), so you're more likely to get a lower quote if you "restrict" yourself to under 3000 miles each year.

the car insurance thing was £300 difference between saying I lived in London and saying I lived in Reading Shocked (this was when I was bullying G to buy a car). And I'm old and have had a car licence for more years than I care to count right now.

I'm seriously thinking about moving out a bit, for this reason amongst others.

yea, always say you only expect to do less than 3000 miles. Very Happy They never ask your current milage see! Very Happy

My step-dad's had loads of classic motors on limited milage policies and theyve never once asked the milage. I'm not suggesting taking the piss and insuring a courier bike on one though....
