Engine Limits

I was watching that Superbike Magazines Wheelie video and the first bit was just getting the front end up. The bike sounded like it was near enough red-lining it.

I was wondering- how high on the rev counter can you go without risking blowing the engine- is it red-lining it or maybe a bit lower.

Red lining an engine won't blow it, that's the point of a red line, they always have a bit of a safety buffer zone aswell.

It is best not to keep an engine constantly at the red line, as it will accellerate wear, and possibly increase the chance of something failing, but it was made to rev that high, so it isn't dangerous.

Generally the rev limiter is set at least 1000 rpm lower than the point at which things are at risk of going pop. The conrod bolts are usually the first thing to shear and you can imaging what damage that causes.

Could double as a handy oil level sight glass maybe?

I did that to a Mercedes 10 litre bus engine a while back, quite entertaining especially as it wasn't my bus! Wouldn't like to experience that on a bike though, bet that was one scary experience!

Was my mates GSXR 400. Engine blew up at 80mph on the motorway with his GF pillion. Managed to keep the bike in a staight line and not fall off.
It was due to oil starvation (lazy cnut never checked level ) still bloody cool though
