I've got a few issues with my Hornet that I'd like your expert advise on Smile The bike has been SORN'd since august last year, and yesterday was the first time it has been run since.

Arrow When I brake, I sometimes get a sort of squeaking/rubbing sound from the front of the bike. It kind of sounds like a push bike's brakes when they squeak. First time I heard this it reminded of of a hyena's laugh. Is this normal?

Arrow When I went out for a ride yesterday, there was some coolant on the chain guard underneath the coolant container. I checked the same place when I got back from my ride today and there wasn't any. Is this just because yesterday was the first time it had been out in ages?

Arrow I got my legal numberplate today, but it's far too big for the bracket/indicator combination behind. The current (illegal Police) plate that's on at the moment fits perfectly in between the indicators, but if I put the legal plate on it'll cover up both indicators. I was thinking of getting a sheet of metal, or something similar, and screwing that where the current plate is. Then screw the big plate onto that, so it hangs under the indicators. Oppinions?

Where the plate should go

Thanks in advance guys Thumbs Up

P.S, Does anyone have a DataTool Veto+ alarm? It takes forever to get it to be armed with the triangle button (transit mode), but I hate having to sit perfectly still whilst filling up because it's armed itself after 30 seconds of the ignition being switched off Sad

I've got the Veto Evo alarm. When it arms it takes a few seconds to sort itself out before movement will set it off. You can hit triangle when after those few seconds. The led on the bike will stay on while it it arming then when it starts to flash it is fully armed and you can hit triangle.

Cheers, I think I understand. I don't have the LED on mine though Sad

The battery in the keyfob could be going because I have to press it loads in all sorts of positions to get it to do the beep for the triangle button. Circle button works OK though Confused

You can only put it in transit mode when it's armed can't you?

Its probably the fob rather than battery if one button works OK. You can only put it in transit/ferry mode when its armed.

Mine is wired up so that it arms itself in ferry mode and i have to push triangle to arm it fully.

Hi - I took mine out for MOT last Tuesday and it did something similar. It's a sort of low pitched squawking noise. Mainly from the rear brake, but it disappeared after a while. The brakes nearly ripped the brake tester out of the ground and the bike passed the test, so I guess they are OK. It had new pads front and rear shortly before going into hibernation, so I know the callipers are fine.

As the tank is at the 'low' pressure side of the system it's probably going to be OK. Was the tank overfull? Did you notice the temp' gauge rising abnormally at all? I would check that the clip that holds the outlet pipe on the tank is OK, looking at the (small) amount of spill and the position it seems to right below the tank outlet. Don't forget to re-check the level.

Hope this helps.

I thought the brakes would be ok, they bite fine so maybe it's because they haven't been used in a while?

Last time I checked, the coolant seemed at a good level. I'm pretty sure it was nearly to the full line (although I'm not certain, will have to check tomorrow). I did re-seat the cap on the coolant container yesterday, so maybe it wasn't down right? Nothing abnormal with the temperature gauge.

Nice hornet, I love the blue ones Thumbs Up

I do too - but 'in confidence' (whispers under breath), I've been told the Yellow one's are faster! Very Happy I'm not so sure though!

Anyway, this is her (plus a slightly fat bloke) blatting, OK.... taking a leisurely stroll around Cadwell last year. See about ½ way down post. She's now sporting a bellypan.

Clicky.......

Sounds like the coolant problem is nothing too serious to me. If it were you'd most likely have a loss each time you were out and the temp' gauge would be doing weird things. I reckon your brakes are probably OK too, but if in doubt, get them checked over - it's not worth the risk.

One thing's for sure about the yellow one, you can't miss the buggers! No excuse for cagers, especially since I wear bright red textiles too Laughing All I need is something green and I'll look like a traffic light Very Happy

Your hornet looks sexy though! Love that bellypan and exhaust. Does the screen help against wind blast?

I wasn't too worried about the coolant, I expected some teething problems to be honest. I'll check the levels, pipes and cap tomorrow and give it a blast then check it afterwards.

It's the number plate that's worrying me the most at the moment. I only go round the out-of-the-way country roads for fear of being pulled over. Saw a police van come past the T junction I was at yesterday so I promptly made a B-line for the opposite direction Laughing Saying that, I've had a police car pull up behind me the first time I took it out when I was stood at a junction (the battery died on me and wouldn't start up again so had to push it 1/4 mile back home Doh!) and they didn't say anything. Still, don't want to try my luck...

That hornet looks nice and tidy, Instigator, but I really don't want to start faffing with undertrays just yet. I'll bear it in mind though Thumbs Up

The screen does (to a point) reduce the wind blast. You need to get tucked down to feel most benefit, which on a Hornet, I think takes a lot of doing (beer belly an all that)! I won't be taking the screen off anytime soon, even though I know that some folk object to them. It suits me.

The can is a carbon Micron Beta and I cannot take any credit for it. I was lucky that the bike came with it, likewise the dinky indicators. The sound from it is great. It did worry me that it would be tugged on the MOT but not even a comment, even when revved hard in an enclosed garage.

The belly pan I bought from ebay. It was Yellow, but not wishing to make my bike go 'faster', I decided to have it painted. The unit was as new, it had been bought in for a customer who had never collected it. The only things missing were the two screws that hold that silvery bit on in front of the downpipes. I've got to say, I think it looks better with it on.

Going on to your no. plate - mine has a slightly smaller than legal plate (the letters and spacing are wrong so I've been told), but it's passed the MOT twice with it on. Saying that the letters aren't italic, so maybe that's why it gets through? Fingers crossed, I haven't had a tug from the long arm of the law yet either!

Any pic's of your bike up on BCF?

I can't take any credit for the stuff on the bike mate, I bought it all as it is (except for the mirrors I fitted today, was doing my head in only having one on the right Rolling Eyes). It did have a scorpion can on too (which sounded fantastic, and it's on the pictures in the link below) but was rather loud, so my cousin put the old one back on for me, and got the MOT guy to ignore the numberplate Laughing

Thread with piccies!

Looks like a tidy Hornet you have there. How effective is the twin headlight conversion? The standard light is pretty damn poor.

That belly pan's a beauty - I wonder what make it is? Are there any markings on it?

I haven't tried it in the dark yet, but from what I saw in the dim garage they looked pretty good. That said, both the main bulbs packed in today, so I've been out with just my sidelights on Confused Dodgy fuse perhaps?

I'm not sure who made the bellypan, but they guy I got the bike from said him and his mate searched high and low for a full length one, and that was the only one they could find and it came from Germany! I'll have a closer look for you tomorrow.
