had mine yesterday...with at least 5000 other bikers at the egg run in glasgow Laughing

what an experience Exclamation Exclamation

learnt two very important lessons about rear observation:

1) don't do a kill-switch backfire when theres another biker stood inches from your can Thumbs Down sorry to that man if he reads these forums Sad

2) don't back into another biker when trying to manouver into a parking position Crying or Very sad sorry Ritchie (True Blue) let me know much to get that scratch sorted Thumbs Up

both incidents were because of me not paying attention to what was going on behind me Embarassed

did you learn anything useful during your first big ride-out?

First ride out with 4 other bikers...if there is someone behind you, do NOT feel pressurized into going quickly....you'll do stupid, stupid manuovres that you wouldn't normally do.

Like overtaking a bus on a bend...*cough*..*ahem* Embarassed

i learnt that when riding with other bikers your lifesaver is VERY important, as they can suddenly appear alongside just as you are about to pull out to overtake. And i second the " dont feel pressured to ride faster than usual" point. Thumbs Up

Yeah, I learnt always go into a parking spot arse first. I'd rather be able to get out quick than park up quick! Thumbs Up

Yeh, keep too wheels on the ground on unlit highways at four o clock in the morning...otherwise you miss your juntion Laughing

And go at the pace of the slowest group member...just don't be afraid to clout him round the head to get him to faster Razz

The only thing I learnt is stay at the back.

Almost all of my dad's mates seem to have a knack of sitting right in your blind spot or right up your arse, so you're constantly looking over your shoulder to check your not cutting one of them up, Rolling Eyes. Like today for example, his mate was following me but sitting about 2 foot to my right and right where I couldn't see him in my mirrors, so all I did was keep an eye out for him, which makes me less aware of what's happening on the road trying not to cause a multi bike pile-up.

well i found the rest of the ride quite relaxed even though there was so many bikes and you barely got much room to yourself.

i think it'll be much smaller gatherings from now at least until the egg run again next year Very Happy

That means they are pretty crap at riding in groups, they should be looking for your face in your mirror to make sure you can see them. Also best to be slightly staggered for a number of reasons, not least of which is that if the lead rider goes over a nasty road defect, you all do and can't see it until it is too late.

In general the last place you want to be is at the back. For reasons I can't be arsed typing out again, 'tail end Charlie' can easily land up having to ride 50% faster than the lead rider just to keep up. Best place for a novice is two or three back, this way you get to follow someone who knows what they are doing but don't suffer too badly from the 'concertina' effect.

What I learned from my first group rideout is that I wasn't as fast as I thought I was.

I've got a bad habit of sitting right up behind people. I feel quite safe doing it but im sure its pretty unnerving for the other rider. Gonna have to stop that.

My favorite trick by far is pulling up alongside and giving the other rider a good hard jab in the ribs knowing they can't punch me back, unless they've got cruise control that is Laughing
