What level of cover do you guys use?

The bikes im looking at purchasing are all below £1500 and i was thinking TPFT was all i would need, but one of my friends queried whether i should have fully comp for medical insurance if/when i come off?

What level of cover do you think is required?

(i did try and do a search on this, but just came up with loads of "what insurance on an R1 at 17 type threads....)

I have TPFT simply because I can't afford / see no need for Fully Comp with my situation at the moment.

I did actually choose TPO but the company gave me TPFT for the same price so I suppose that's ok. Laughing

All of my bikes are insured fully comp, partly because of the good legal cover I get from Motorcycle Direct, but mainly because they cost £££ and I know I would trash them if they weren't!

Fully comp is useful if you have an accident where another party is claiming - at that point you might as well claim anyway.

Afraid I'm not sure what fully comp covers as far as medical stuff, but would have thought a dedicated policy that covers you for other activities as well would make more sense fo rthat.

However for a £1.5k bike I would actually also look at TPO insurance - at around this level it starts to get to the point that if you have TPFT and your bike is stolen it can actually cost you more than if you had TPO, had the bike stolen and didn't make any claims!

I know i need TPFT as the pikeys around here will certainly have a go at stealing a bike im sure.Especially around the station. Does fully comp serve any medical purpose at all all?, or is it just for peace of mind if you come off down a back road with noone else involved, you can still get your bike fixed?

I have tpft on my bike worth £1600 the insurance is about £220 a year.
If I was to have fully comp it would be about £500 a year in my eyes its not worth paying the extra for me

Just to post from the other side of things here. I have a Bandit 600 (in pieces now though) which was insured tpft. I had a massive off in November last year, lost the back and highsided, would have been fine if that was all that happened but i slid down the road into a two-pillared village sign (the seriously solid kind), wrapped my shin around one of them and broke my spine and ribs (which collapsed both lungs) with the other, as well as massive near-fatal internal bleeding. Anyway, long and short of it is, i was in hospital for 2 months (ICU for 3 weeks) and will not be able to work before Christmas at the earliest, am only just off crutches and walking with a serious hobble now. Crashing like this is a serious financial outlay, not only have i got a bike thats pretty much written off, but ive not been able to work for 5 months and wont for at least another 7, and sick pay is nowhere near enough! Opting for fully comp over the tpft i had would have put me in a much better financial footing than i am now (how much obviously would have depended on the level of personal injury cover). An extra couple of hundred quid now could save you tens of thousands if the worst happens.

I know i probably sound like someone advertising for insurance companies, but i seriously regret not opting for fully comp, and for the unemployment/gap cover on finance payments!

i have TPO
i wdnt trust insurers to pay out very quickly if i had a bike stolen. or for repairs

so id prefer to pay for it myself, as premiums would go up anyway.

with an old bike that has little or no value left for anybody but for transporting me from A to B , TPO is enough for my finances.

but then I don't trust insurance companies at all , with full comp , they'd probably do what they do in the US and drag their feet in the hope that you die before they have to pay for your surgery. Or find some way of worming their way out of it.

Only last year did insurance companies declare that Cancer was to be taken off their pay up list , since not enough people were dying from it and it was cured more often than not.

Hi,

Unlike Car insurance many Bike insurance policy dont cover your personal injury (beyond what they have to pay the NHS) so walker may not have been better off.

For the medical side of things is may be better to look at income protection insurance that will will cover you if you are ill/off work for any reason. The policy gets cheaper the longer you leave it before it kicks in. They usually pay out lump sums for permanent injuries as well but it depends on the policy.

Income protection can then cover the comp part of your bike cover, credit card payment cover, loan payment cover, mortgage payment cover etc so can work out cheaper in the long run.

However if you bike insurance did cover your personal injury claim you may well be able to claim more in a bad situation.

I would have a look round a bit before deciding.

Regards
C
