I am looking to fit air horns to my suzuki fr50 (50cc 1981). Firstly is it legal? Secondly, if it is legal would it be a relatively easy to fit them and could it cause any problems?

It is legal if it is a constant tone (any air horn with compressor will be ok.. the tune playing ones wont be..)

It is easy enough you WILL need to run it through a relay, the horn will come with a diagram, relays can be got from scrap yards for pennys instead of pounds..

But on a 50, i doubt your alternator would cope, or the battery, it takes a fair old spank off the battery to make it work propperly Sad

Standard automotive relay will be fine.

They're quite bulky generally. Except - Have you seen these:

A four pin relay, big or small (get them out of a bmw or similar, they have a big load of them ina row.. get an armfull they should be cheap) just be carefull of the numbers because they are in different places on some

Don't forget to fuse it!

They need to be pointed fowards and down slightly, it might make sense to get a combined compressor/horn unit as low an ampage as you can find (mine draws allot but it also runs at 24v)

Those aren't air horns. Their description is misleading. Smile

If its not got a foook off compressor then there not air horns Razz

The combined ones look ok but they aren't small, not smaller than the compressor + horns.. they mean you can have one bit one place and the horns elsewhere... combined will be more efficient though...

The two wires that go to your standard horn are used to switch the relay. The rest is shown on the packaging.

My dad has the big fook off ones that sound like a train on his lorry and they are stupidly loud Shocked I got a lift into school in it once and he blew them twice, well it got everyones attention Very Happy
(he has to re-connect the real horn for MOT's or somthing though...)
