I just had an interesting conversation with Norwich Union about insurance. Just a quick straw poll.

How many bikers also have a van, or a van in the household?

My dad has a lorry so I guess that counts.

What was it about?

It's about possible abuse of the data protection act. 6 months after my company bought a van, which I drive on their policy but which is kept at my house overnight - all of a sudden my girlfriend is receiving mailshots which read:

Quote:
As a motorbike owner, we understand that sometimes you need another vehicle for the practical stuff. If you have a van - we can provide dedicated insurance....... etc, etc

Bit odd. She's never had a van before or ever got a quote for one.

I phoned them and initially they were quite cagey - "oh, it's just a blanket mailshot". When I asked "Why didn't I get one then?" they had no answer and went off to consult with colleagues.

IMO It's a bit out of order to use a computer to process all these bits of information about the extended particulars of your life and try and fit it to marketing purposes.

That might not be happening - it might just be a co-incidence. Hence the poll Smile

Next part of the poll will be - Did you get a mailshot offering insurance? Wink

Funnily enough I just had junk mail through the post today from Norwich Union about van insurance. Nothing to do with that bike quote I got from them last year then Rolling Eyes

I hadn't recieved any such communications, by the way. Just that they happened to be cheapest in the long list of people I was calling.

To be honest I'd prefer to have targetted advertising rather than loads of random stuff sent to me offering a newly designed gardening trowl or whatever.

If it was random, that's fine. If they just sent her a mail about van ins because she has a bike, then that's OK.

Don't know why they would, bit of a leap to assume bikers have vans.

If they asked their database for a list of addresses where vans are kept (no matter who owns them), in order to cross reference this with bikers and send them a targetted mailshot, then this possibly contravenes the data protection act.

Upshot is fairly harmless when it's just marketing info. But these databases hold lots of personal info.

How about if your premium gets put up because your lodger has made an excessive amount of claims in the past? or because your partner's brother has a habit of lying on application forms?

They're also asking for a lot of stuff which theycan keep on record which seem to have no relevance. they've already started to ask us if we have a non-motoring police record when we want a motoring quote. What the hell has that got to do with your risk as a road-user?

Like I said - all a bit conspiracy theory really. But information has always been power.Smile

TBH mate i'd have binned the junk mail without even looking at it.

Much Like I did with my Norwich Union policy.

That worries me quite a bit too, i just tell them thats none of their business and i'll only give them information that is relevant to the quote i'm after.

i dont think so.

I used to work for a company and we had a big list of people who we would ring to ask if they wanted to buy an ldv. the list was kept updated with when they were gonna buy a van and what kind of van.

I dont find marketing or targeted marketing sinister.

Id prefer it if i recieved ads or junk mail that were targeted at my needs rather than just random junk.

i have thought about getting a bedford rascal as i think they are just big enough to get a bike in.
