You want your engine speed to match the speed it will go to, once you've shifted down. So if your bike will jump up to 6k when you shift down, you want the engine to be doing that before it gets into that gear.

It's less precise than that (for me, anyway), basically all it does is reduce the lurch you get from shifting down, and stops you locking up if you're shifting down particularly quickly.

All it requires is a quick on/off of the throttle, while the clutch is in.

Edit: By the way, this is not expected of you on your test. Good luck with it. Thumbs Up

Thanks for that Rookie I had always wondered what people meant by it! Thumbs Up .

I find that I don't have to do this though really. I have experienced the "shudder" if I downshift at too high revs but through riding my bike quite a lot it rarely happens anymore as I find I know when to downshift from the sound of the engine (I don't even have a rev counter!). However this will almost certainly change when I get a different bike and need to learn where to downshift, so I will probably give this "Blipping" a go Smile .

On most bikes it isnt neccicary. but try higking a 600cc+ single cylinder bike down through the gears, downshift too early without blipping the throttle and the back will lock straight away.

You also need to do it on 2 stroke bikes when your nailing them as the oil comes in with the fuel, so under engine braking the engine revs high but with no fuel & oil! *BANG* Laughing

When I first started riding I even managed to make my POS have a locked up back wheel! Was quite a scary experience the first time! Laughing .

Never riden a 2-stroke so I wouldn't know Wink .

Indeed not entirely neccessary, and not the safest route either (you're effectively eliminating engine braking) but brakes are good enough that you don't need engine braking, and it makes the ride more comfortable, in a way. Smile

Dont do as I have done on many occasions when downshifting through many gears and blipping the throttle when the clutch is out, the new lower gear and a yank on the gas akes the bike move very quickly towards the car you have been braking behind Embarassed Shocked

My father taught me to ride a geared bike - he's from the old school and said that I had to blip the throttle when I downchanged or I'd lock the wheels and fuck the gearbox. So I got into the habit of doing it.

When taking training for my test, my instructor told me it was not necessary on modern bikes and not to do it. I found it made the ride far less smooth.

Now on my 3rd bike and I'm still doing it! Sounds great too. Good idea to learn if you can - dosn't do any harm and might even do some good!

I do it most of the time, however when really going for it i don't use the clutch either. A slight blip of the throttle whilst pushing down on the lever gets the engine speed and gearbox speed spot on, sounds MotoGP-esque too. Smile

I usually do it, but haven't mastered it while pulling the brake lever at the same time. When I try it my finger(s) pull on the lever more as my wrist twists the throttle back.
