Everyone list what you failed for( if you did fail or what you can fail for ). Eg..Foot down in a U turn, Pulling out too soon ( just a couple ive picked up from the forum ) i want to try and get a nice long list collated for all the up-coming riders amongst us.

Don't wheelie?

Don't leave your indicator on!

Do try and enjoy the ride!

Don't Crash!

Have a look here

https://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=360

It explains what the examiner will be marking you on.

Use the bus lane (if there is one) just make sure you read the sign.

Don't put your foot down on a U turn

Don't speed

Position yourself correctly especially when turning

Remember to do Lifesavers

Check mirrors all the time

Adjust your mirrors slightly in a way that you have to move your head to look in them. That way the examiner can see you are checking more easy. Good luck Thumbs Up

Make sure you stop behind a bus or a large vehicle in a way that you can see their mirrors. My instructor says that's very important.

Also:

He also said that when it comes to doing the Emergency (controlled) stop, the examiner will tell you to go around a block, so you emerge a little further back than where you were, coming back on yourself sorta and then doing the stop.

---> It will mean that the examiner won't be able to see you for a bit, and that's a good chance to quickly practise your emergency stop.

IF YOU STALL while doing the stop, it's not a fail, IF you calmly pull the clutch in, start the bike up again, put it in gear and ride on to the side of the road having done both shoulder checks it should be fine.

That's just my two cents, everything else I think everyone has touched on.

Don't go too wide when turning left or right, making sure you're within half of your lane.

And follow the curb round, when you're turning left.

HOPEFULLY I remember all of this! As my test is tomorrow!!

Good luck!

Thumbs Up

In addition to all of the above:
Arrow Watch your speed (it's a repeat, I know, but it's what I failed on twice - It's a really easy mistake to make and it makes you feel really stupid if you do Wink)
Arrow Pay good attention to pedestrian crossings (especially zebra crossings): they've got right of way and can be an instant fail if don't let them cross.

Ride like you have all day. Slow and smooth.

Always give way, dont try and be clever.

MAKE SURE YOU STOP AT STOP SIGNS!! I didnt know about this one (hehe well I havent read all my highway code yet). Even if there is no traffic and its blatantly safe you still have to stop!

Always give at least a 8-10 foot infront of the car in front when stationary and remember the 2 second rule!

If the speed limit is 60 then do 60.

Really exagerate your observations, life savers etc.

Don't fail!

I'm doing my test tomorrow...

adding to that make sure you turn the engine of before getting off the bike..

also dont stop if you have space to move ahead. I.E waiting behind a bus which has pulled over. if you can go past it then do so cos I heard someone failed for that cos they were holding up traffic...

Also on the getting off and engine topic, I had to switch bike just before my test, and every time I went to switch it off, it was already off!! The first time I thought I must have stalled it, but then the second time I realised something was amiss Thinking Turns out the engine cuts off when you put the stand down, which it didn't do on the other bike Doh!

Do you actually fail if you don't put the stand down before getting off? I always get off first! I suppose on a heavier bike it would make sense but my bike is fairly light so I have no problem holding it up..

Dunno if not putting the stand down is an actual fail or not, but I remember on the CBT we dismounted before using the centre stand, but on the actual lessons after the CBT we were taught to put the stand down and switch the engine off before dismounting.

Of course, by the time I got to the DAS lessons and test on the GS500 it felt much safer to put the stand down 1st anyway.

Maybe someone else can confirm either way, but IMO as long as you can show that you're in control of the bike at all times (and obviously don't drop it), that it shouldn't be a problem??

As for do's and don'ts, I got one minor for following too close when riding behind congested traffic... but basically passed first time Thumbs Up Laughing

BTW, anyone heard from damnas - the test was yesterday??

EDIT : Sorry damnas - better luck next time

Do watch for speed limit signs eg: 30mph 40mph etc and ride accordingly, i missed a 40 sign and continued at 30 for a hunderd yards or so before seeing the next one and got a minor fault for it.

Do ride confidently

Do lots of observations

Dont let anybody out of a side road, they can fuck things up for you by messing about

Dont let nerves get the better of you

Dont put your foot down on a u-turn.

Don't forget to change to neutral before letting the clutch out at the end Wink

A Friend of mine failed on that after a near perfect test.

I'd agree with this on a straight A road.

But we have some 60 roads around here that are not safe to do 60,
ie back country roads. My wife was always told to drive at these
roads at a sensible safe speeds, thus this was about 45 mph.
And yes these roads are on the test route.

Careful, I was told by my instructor that the examiner must be able to clearly see your head in your mirrors. Otherwise, technically, he/she could mark you down for an improperly (and potentially dangerous) set up motorcycle.
