Went down to the ACE, with a friend of mine.
Spent all day there (when it was sunny) waiting for another guy he knew to finish his bikesafe course to come on a ride. So sat there from 2 till 5 waiting to go for a ride. Roads where quiet, weather was nice.

Then he came out, at 5, just as it started to rain. Well, having sat there for 3 hours waiting, id hoped for a nice little ride anyway.

Now heres what i learnt.

Whilst i like filtering, its less fun on the North Circular, in the rain.

Its even LESS fun when you are at the back of a four bike convoy, including one or two quite slow riders.

Its EVEN LESS fun when you have no actual destination to be heading to, you dont know the roads, and the guy who confidently announced he would lead (when originally questioned he was going to take us on some nice A roads... the A40 DID NOT COUNT) also didnt bloody know either.

So i got the rarely experienced pleasure of driving in circles, in london rush hours, with a bunch of idiots, in the rain, through one of the most dangerous (if not the) roads in london.

To top it off (luckily just before we went back to this guys place, through luck or judgement i dont know) my coolant started boiling.

20 miles in over an hour.

Great fucking ride out that was.

(oh and to top it ALL off, my main bulb went, so i had to ride back from ealing on the motorways with a choice of pilot or main beam.... GREAT)

This is what mobile phones are made for. Thumbs Up

You text: How much longer you going to be?

Him text: Dunno, a while

You text: right, I'll text you back in an hour with the new meeting place

Some day you need to get chatting to my other half and ask him about the year he rode to the Bulldog on a supposedly organised run. He left his house at 9.30 in the morning for what is about 150 miles maybe? They didn't get there until gone midnight, and even then they'd lost some! Just give me a nudge before you mention it though cos I'll need to make sure his blood pressure pills are handy....... Wink Laughing

In a grim way - akin to people in warzones - the constant knowledge of death and incompentence sorrounding me was quite nice. I wouldnt have minded the rain and filtering through such a hazardous road if it was just me, and id known where i was going (or in fact had a destination).

But it was just having to watch what my bike and 3 others where doing, assessing whether they could make gaps so i could slow down before even theyd realised theyd have to stop, AND watching all the cars trying to merge in everywhere AND of course trying to follow the nutter in front with no lane control who i was meant to be following meander from one side of the road to the other.

Ooooh fun.

But god i love my 600, especially now its dynoed proper like. Any revs (over about 4k) and a quick snap of the wrist gets you out of most problems.

Oh and baby, i got to the ACE about 2, my mates arrived about 2.30/3 ish (long story, more fun in a different way). We headed out for a little jaunt to wembley stadium (Rolling Eyes) and back, and as the guy was finishing his bikesafe course and had said hed be back at 4, 'we' decided to wait for him.

He didnt tell us about the hour debrief Rolling Eyes

So we just sat around like planks for an hour, and JUST as he finished it started pissing it down, and all the suits started driving home.

Fucking

Fan

Fucking

Tastic!

True.

However do you regularly find yourself following a bunch of muppets who have no idea where they are going, when you yourself have no idea where you are going?

First time in rush hour traffic (which to be fair i didnt find too bad, asides from areas where lanes merged etc) in london, and i had to do it behind 3 numpties, with no idea of our destination or what the roads up ahead did.

Fun.

I ride the north circ daily come rain or shine... as far as london roads go its not that bad, infact in the rain people seem less likely to randomly switch lanes or open doors, so if you are sensible you can go a bit faster when conditions are right... just be careful near brent park (exit after the ace heading towards brent cross) because all the idiots come streaming out of ikea... blood boiling from battling their way through that hell hole... I have seen some crazy shit happen on/near that sliproad.....

Well ya know, barely covering 20 miles in over an hour, with coolant boiling over it was that stop and start in bloody first or at best second, and barely getting past 50 mph id consider it reasonably hard to beat.

And to be fair, we went ALL around london, and i can pretty much spot oxford street and thats about my limit.

Edit: Oh and my bone of contention wasn't "oooh the north circ was so hard, oooh i nearly died so much', it was a 'why did i get roped into following a bunch of mongoloid cunts around a road i dont know, in the rain, for no apparent reason'.

Bear in mind, we got separated on several occasions and had to catch up etc, and on thos times i was fine. Just 4 people going for the same gaps in moving traffic Rolling Eyes

Chaps - I have to disagree. I've ridden on all these roads, and traffic on the Eustopn Road tends to move slower than on the NCR, Eastbound & Westbound. Consequently the number of 'lane switchers' is less. As for Shaftesbury Ave, east of Charing X Rd/Totteham Crt Rd you ride on the other side (Being mindful of U-turning taxis) on the other side, just filter to the lights at Piccadilly Circus.

Agreed - the crazies come hairing out of there - straight across three lanes....I think it's a Harlesden thing! Wink

Shaft WC2 is hard especially around the Dean and Greek exits due to people pulling out. The piccadilly end just gets locked due to the bad traffic light arrangement.

To me yes the Euston is slower for cars but is more fun and challenging for filtering due to being narrower.
