Was out for a ride today, with my lights on (i dont usually)and had two cars pull out on me on seperate incidents.
The second guy once i convinced him to stop told me i'd flahed him out ,what i want to know is if any of you guys have had similar experiences.
PS BOTH CARS WERE VOLVO'S no kidding!

ride dipped, not full beam
as if you a full beam and u go over a bump, it looks to them like you are flashing them out

this is because full beam is directed straight ahead so its bright when its pointed at them. If you bike goes up or down a little dip, the light will be pointing above or below their eye line, so it will look a lot less bright almost as if it is off.

There are theories that say daytime headlights impairs the ability of many driver to judge the approach speed of a narrow vehcile.

Colin, do you mean full beam, or just dipped?

I always ride with dipped on. I perfectly understand why some of you ride with either just sidelights or none at all. But I watched a police program once where a biker had a white van turn into his path, and they spent ages trying to find bits of his lights to see if they were switched on or not. So I have mine on dipped to avoid being "blamed" for an accident if nothing else.

I personally subscribe to both theories after arriving at them both on my own prior to reading this. Not trying to be big headed or owt, that last sentance sounded terrible! lol

Basically, I've been knocked off with main beam on and wondered why the driver pulled across my path.

Only recently have I noticed this high-beam+bump=flashing lights occurance, mostly in villages or near junctions with manhole covers and trences, etc.

Also, when I drive my car (or am passenger in one) I find it really difficult to judge a bike's speed when the main beam is on. Especially if it is a sunny bright day.

Dipped beam should be fine in any situation. I personally tend to use no lights at all. I actually use a head light cover fitted to a black bike!

Only if visibility ain't all that great or when all vehicles seem to have their headlights on will I use mine!

Isn't it daft when all cars seem to put their headlights on because they saw someone else doing it in the middle of the day? Nightmare though, as people stop looking for vehicles and look for headlights only! If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Why should this be an issue though? It's not compusary to have them on is it? (genuine question)

When I see a car coming from a side road you break fairly hard since you presume there going to pull out. The front end diving could have the effect of flashing.

I hate the idea of Manufacturers setting the headlights to permanently on, It would make me consider another make of bike. Is it some new Euro standard?

I think it's becoming ever more standard. My '03 SV650 has the lights wired on dipped headlight.

Most new bikes, say post late 2004 have this.

I have to confess, it is easy to misinterpret a bikes head lamp for flashing you out.

I like having the right to chose to use them. I hate all this nanny state b#ll@~s where you are so controled to protect yourself from yourself that you commit suicide in depression. Next precaution: Non-shock electric, paper bullets, stretchy rope and blunt knives!

Can't really see the problem with lights being on all the time. If it's such a problem wire a switch in. Maybe I'm too relaxed about the nanny state thing but I reckon the pros of it outweigh the cons. (At the moment).

I think when you use side lights instead of dipped, if you want to use main for 'flashing' it's much more pronounced and a lot more readable.

No idea mate. It was a police force down south so maybe they have different "rules" to follow than other counties?

I'm not sure if it's compulsory or not, but we always got told to have them on at all times on our lessons.

A few weeks ago, I was waiting at a junction in the car, and a guy in dark clothes on a bike came from the right with no lights on. It was broad daylight, but because he was wearing black/green colours he camouflaged into the trees behind him. I can remember thinking to myself that had I been an ordinary cager I might have pulled out on him. If he'd got his lights on he'd have been easily visible.
