Now that i've got the FJR, and it's SOoo capable for me in everything I do day-to-day (commuting, touring, 2-up etc) I'm toying with the idea of getting shot of the Thunderace and replacing it with something a little more bonkers...
initial thoughts are along the lines of...
Buell XB12S or 12R
Triumph Speed Triple or Speed four
Ducati 748 or 9whatsit
something that's fun, but different.. no Fireblades, gixxers or other boring, bland stuff.. I'm looking for character here
got about £3k to spend when I take into account what I can get for the Thunderace. The ace is a top bike, but i'm not using it properly, and it's too much(?) of an all-rounder when I have the FJR.
naked/streetfighter styles, and big twins are welcome.
not so keen on super-moto.

You can have my NSR125R for £1500
A little 2t 250 would be quick and different, completely impractical as well. |

Blasphemy!!!
What about a Fireblade? slighty down on power compaired to the thunderace but better handling and is more of a hoolgan sporty looking bike. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

if you could afford one id say a new speed tripple, buell or a ktm super duke, but all of them are over your 3k budget, id avoid the older speed tripples as the engines are gutless in comparison to the new one, if you like the ducati 748/9XX and the speed tripple what about a naked duke? you could get quite a nice monster for £3000 also theres oodles of nice potential streetfighters out there that could be bought and customised for that sort of cash, why buy a factory fighter when you can make your own? personally i rekon a busa with the fairing ripped off and riser bars is about as bonkers as your gona get for 3k but if you get one. i want a go on it ____________________ nonstop unicorns vomiting sunshine pills into a rainbow toilet

The problem is that you're not going to get much for £3k in that mould. I reckon a Bandit 1200 with lowered gearing would fit the bill, wheelie monster, unless you're looking for better handling than that?
If so, I'd get a TL1000s and change the crappy rotary damper for an Ohlins. That has character, despite being Japanese, and you'll get a decent one for £3k.
Cheers

Have heard thats it pointless to do (5 gears is fine) and is a big job to strip down a big in-line 4, if you do it have the cyclinders bored out to 1040cc with a wesco piston kit as well which will sort the thunderace oil buring problem when thrashed.
Have you got any info on this big bang timing conversion? sounds cool. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

I have a spare engine, which has a munched 'box, so it's as weasy to drop in the closer ratio 6speed box than the standard 5 speed. IF I also lose the exup valve with a full system, it will be slightly beneficial having a 6speed closer ratio box, as it means I can keep it in the power more. (1st and 6th ratios are the same as 1st and 5th on the stock box) the engine is in good nick, apart from the 'box, and I'm more than happy with the power as it is. I don't see any point in increasing the power since a big-bang engine will already stress the components more, more power will just chocolatefy it.

i'm still looking into it, but it Should be a case of new camshafts, and modifying the ignition timing.
what I need to work out is the timing format.
will it be (1,2) - (3,4) or 1 - (2,3) - 4 or 1-2-(3,4)
(ignoring ACTUAL cyclinder firing order)
it's a project, and a bit of nonsense.. and with a spare engine, I can afford to be a bit silly, althought I'm still tempted to put on of the engines in an aluminium caterham replica
