my mate and i took our exhausts off last night and then turned the engine on. The sound was divine. Could I drive around like that or not?
would it destroy my engine....or not?

What bike is it?

I wouldnt imagine that taking the end can off your bike will damage your engine much, it will how ever affect the performance ever so slightly, eg it will feel a little more punchy and not as smooth.

Your just running on straight through pipes... nowt special apart from you will get moaned at by everyone, will get off your bike every time with a splitting headache, and you will get bored of the sound after about 2 days.

Trust me, my mates done it.

Also if the police catch a holda you then you best be prepared to touch your toes as they bend you over.

Other than that Thumbs Up

4 stroke, yes? Changing the exhaust in any way usually changes the carburation needs of the engine. It might run lean without the end can, so if you don't rejet it, long term it may overheat and worst case - hole a piston.

But short term it shouldn't damage the engine. But, do a ride-by though. Bike with no end-can can sound very sporty when you're standing next to it. But when moving at revs they tend to sound like a pikey transit van. Wink

It's also very likely that when you arrive at your destination, you will stink.

And you may well have half the police in the neighbourhood converging on your position.

2 strokes are dependant on air flow on a much greater level than a 4 stroke. Without the end can you change the air flow dynamics so much that it realy wont have much go at all...

Wasn't good

Didn't make any difference to be honest.

Its a traight through can so doesnt realy do much when its on anyway. The expansion chamber does all the pressure and stuff, the can is just there to make it quieter.... well thats what ive worked out Confused

Yup, kinda.

The end can does contribute to the overall air flow effect. But as you say, the expansion chamber is the main part.

If he still had the stinger in place then it would have had little effect to the performance.

Did this on my bike thursday! My dad decided the best way to test if the exhaust is limiting my bike was just to take it off completely! So I went for a quick ride on it (only about 2 miles). Holy **** was it loud! Shocked . Good for a laugh, but I would never want to leave it off because the noise was horrendous! Wink .

Done it to my 1150GS ages ago and it improved the running, before it was running way too lean now its spot on. Thumbs Up But the CAT is still on(giving some back pressure) and that keeps the noise low. It also passed the MOT without the silencer as the CAT is E marked. Wink

I find it gives a lot more power lower down and helps with wheelies a great deal compared to the stock exhaust.

My exhaust needed a good polish, so I took it off yesterday. Started the thing without it on - Shocked I thought it was loud with the can on, but it's nothing compared to that. It sounds like a big American muscle car on tickover. I couldn't rev it too much though, we have some neighbours. Laughing

Maybe I've mis read that, but are you saying you think takin the end can off made it less lean? Confused
R1_lad, is that the exhaust you ride you're bike with all the time? Shocked

Both will depend on the can to a very limited extent. Important part of 4 stroke exhaust design is the lengths of the down pipes, how they join together and the overall lengths. Only one of those 3 are you possibly playing with when you take the can off.

All the best
