It's in most of todays papers:

[quote=The Times]
A CAR dealer caught speeding at 156mph on a busy dual carriageway while disqualified was jailed for five months yesterday. Jason McAllister, 28, was recorded travelling at more than twice the motorway speed limit in his BMW M3 on the A90 between Aberdeen and Dundee.
At one point on his journey, which he made in the dark, he passed through a 40mph zone at more than 120mph, before reaching 156.7mph. Describing the driving as “absolutely outrageous”, Sheriff Kevin Veal sentenced him to five months in jail and banned him from driving for four years.

Forfar Sheriff Court was told that McAllister, from Aberdeen, repeatedly drove at speeds of more than 100mph on a 70-mile journey on March 6 between the city and the outskirts of Dundee, where he was stopped by police, who found that he was already banned from driving because of a speeding offence.

Sentencing him yesterday, Sheriff Veal said that his behaviour had endangered every other driver on the road. When travelling at its fastest, McAllister’s car would have taken about 1,000ft to stop. “This level of speed is absolutely outrageous and puts at risk every other person and user of the road at the time,” the sheriff said.

Chris Mackintosh, the procurator fiscal, told the court that the speed of the 3.2 litre, £45,000 BMW was the highest recorded by Scottish police.

McAllister, who earlier admitted a charge of dangerous driving and driving without insurance, had his speed monitored at several points along the route. At the Forfar bypass, where a temporary 40mph limit was in place, he was clocked at 120.6mph. Two further checks on the A90 recorded him driving at an average of 100.2mph and 103.1mph before reaching 156.7mph at North Tarbrax in Angus.

Grampian Police tipped off neighbouring Tayside Police and a roadside patrol was set up to look out for McAllister. When he was pulled off the road at 8.40pm he told police: “This is all I need. I have just fallen out with the girlfriend.”

McAllister’s speed on a public road surpassed the 155mph recorded by police that was reached by a Porsche driver in 1990 and the 154mph by an Aston Martin in 1997. In 2000 Daniel Nicks filmed himself at 175mph in Buckinghamshire on his 900cc Honda Fireblade.

Lynne Bentley, for the defence, said that in the past her client had made arrangements to be driven, but this time “he unwisely and stupidly made the decision to drive”. McAllister had owned the car for a few months, but had intended to sell it.

Nick Hull, of Tayside police, said: “The driving of this man was reckless beyond belief and showed a complete and utter contempt for the law and the public.”

Road safety experts described the speed as “suicidal”. They criticised the court for not imposing a life-long driving ban, but commended the custodial sentence.

Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: “This demonstrates that if you are driving dangerously, even if you do not cause an accident, you can be jailed. Courts are getting tough. We do not want to see our roads turned into race tracks.”

Gah, 5 months in jail is not enough for that guy...if it was *just* speeding, then it would be harsh, but the fact that he was driving whilst banned and without insurance, and at stupid speeds, then he was asking for trouble. The fool.

I was told that BMW's were all restricted to 150MPH, I suppose he must have derestricted it?

Sounds like a bit of a muppet driving like that when he didn’t even have a licence, just attracting more attention to him self.

the faster ones are limited to 156mph due to some european regulation or whatever, best bit is that the car manufacturers have 15% free way as to how much faster the car can go while limited. then there's the fact it's a high revving engine on the verge of it's maximum revving potential before it goes bang and most "chipers" also increase the redline when they take the limiter off, meaning a bigger chance of the bang happening. It didnt say what he was banned for (speeding?), and the reason they did him for no insurance is beacuse his existing ban invalidates it.

Mind you, he is meant to have been a dodgy character known to the police for other activities

All the best
