Just wondering, as a mate is thinking of selling his car for a bike, but wants to keep his plate.

Thanks,

Toby

Hi

Used not to be possible but it is now I think. The DVLA realised that not allowing plates to go from cars to bikes was loosing them a load of money they could otherwise cream off.

Think it is about £80 each time you move it. Might be cheaper to put it on retention.

All the best

Keith

One stupid rule to note is that the vehicle you wish to transfer the plate from must have an MOT.

Dad tried to transfer the plate from an ancient, ancient bike he has (plate was something like WGA 546) to his Audi, and they wouldn't let him because the bike didn't have an MOT.

Yes you can do this but you cant put it on if its making the vehicle appear newer than it actually is, for example putting a plate like MY04ZXR on a 1995 bike!

And yes it is £80 to transfer! Thumbs Up

As Keith said above it is allowed.

The rule used to be that if you transfered a plate from a car onto a bike it could then only be transfered to another motorcycle.

However, this has changed recently (last 2 years give of take) and so now you can transfer a plate from acar to a bike and back again.

As said, fee payable for each transfer. Or you could do as Keith suggests and pay a yearly 'retainer' to just keep the plate 'live' and not allocated to another vehicle. However, if you do this remember to renew each year (don't know if they issue reminders) otherwise the number gets put back into the pool for allocation/purchase.

HTH Thumbs Up
