I have a friend who is interested in getting into biking, she is 5'4 and would like some info on where to start. She would be wanting to travel from her uni in reading to canterbury, which is a fairly long journey, and generally around reading for going to shops etc.
Would it be better for her to get a 125cc bike, or do the A2 test (she is 18) and start out on a 400/500cc bike?

Also, as the budget is limited, what would be a good bike to start on?
Also, how much would insurance be for an 18 year old girl?

Thanks in advance

Alright thanks, she's worried that she'll drop the bike because of her size and weight.

There's some tips for shorter riders around.

Do a search on here for details.
Plenty you can do to help, both to the bike and the way you handle it.

I would reccomend doing her test and looking at an SV650S.

You want to be using the motorway really, and as such doing the test and a bit of fairing helps.

I would recomend that she takes her restricted full licence, because the test gets more difficult in 2008, at 5'4 she is a little limited in choce of bikes but even if she stays on a 125 at least she wont have to keep taking cbt every 2 years. If she wants a sports bike things like the CBR400, VFR400 or ZXR400 are tiny or most customs have low seats.

The CBR is particulary low. A bit harder to ride smoothly than something like SV, but if she doesn't mind the riding position, not a bad little bike.
