 |
|
Any one know how to go about fitting R1 forks to Vmax.
I know the Vmax forks are longer than the R1 so how do you go about extending them
Would you need to upgrade the fork springs to cope with the extra weight.
Would I need to use R1 yokes and will these fit onto the max ok. |

You might need to get new yokes specially made to make them fit.
That's what I have to do anyway but I'm fitting yamaha parts to a suzuki bike.
It's probably worth finding some R1 forks and trying them out first though. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

Mar jay & Finglonga, If you look in street fighter mags you can see many examples of R1 forks fitted to the vmax & it looks quite cool,
If you read my post you would notice it said (I know the Vmax forks are longer than the R1 so how do you go about extending them). this should & will cure any problems with frame geometry,
As for the handling its quite obvious you have never ridden a Vmax, although they are not up to par with todays modern crotch rockets the handling really is not that bad.
Still need to know how to go about extending R1 forks. |

You've got a couple of choices, both will cost you money though .
Fork extensions where you can replace the fork tops with a longer piece to bring them to the right length but then you've still got to have yokes made/adapted to fit them to your bike. It's not the strongest to do it that way especially considering the extra weight of the Vmax over the R1
Have a set of stepped yokes made where the standard R1 forks fit but the tops are a bit below the top yoke making them the right length for your bike. You're looking at around £300 or more to have them made though, places like TES do them.
Your basic steering geometry remains the same as does ground clearance etc. if you use stepped yokes you might gain an inch or so of wheelbase. ____________________ I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite so sure. |

it may look quite cool but i think vmax forks are better on vmaxs and r1 forks are better on r1s

How would you know considering you own neither and have probably not worked on either as well.

the forks are designed for that particular bike and are set up accordingly

So they need respringing and damping, wheres the problem?

but im one of those idiots who gets a bike for the way it rides rather than to get attention at bike meets.

Starting to sound like an idiot yes. Your comments are irrelevant on this subject.
He wants a V-max, he wants stiffer forks. Simple as that, its a common upgrade.

when will i ever learn eh.

I have no idea. Possibly when you realise standard bikes suit 99% of people. The other 1% want something else. |

im not sure if i agree with you or not.
on the fork thing i obviously dont as the forks wont work properly on his bike
but when it came to the tuning of my tt600, i preferred one that had been messed with using a tuneboy (reprograms the ecu to get different fueling). previous owner says this was one on a dyno.
when i took my bike to have something else fixed, the mechanic was appalled at ppl who think they know better than the manufacturer.
The question is whether the standard setting is better than the customised setting or not.
vmax bloke is changing his forks purely for the look so i doubt it will improve the bike.
with the customised fueling on my tt600, maybe it wasnt set up right, maybe I would prefer standard tune. I dont know, so im gonna use the tuneboy to record all the current settings on my pc, get the triumph bloke to reset it to what he thinks it should be, save those on my pc, and then see which i prefer
or i might just be able to download the stock settings
so in principle i agree with you sickpup, but mostly i think customising is meddling for the sake of it and fucks things up. thats certainly what my triumph mechanic thinks. |
It would have helped if your Triumph came out of the factory with the correct settings for the purpose it was intended. However it didn't and they all had to be "modified" because the fuelling was wrong. You're still modifying and CUSTOMISING it to your own needs.
So what's the difference between you and Blackmaxger??
The only difference I can see is he knows what he wants and roughly what he's talking about and you don't, you only know what your Triumph mechanic tells you. It's a bit like believing everything that's written in MCN ____________________ I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite so sure. |

Sorry to but in randomly but isn't adding extra inches to stanchions a bit dodge? I'd much rather have some custom made if I had the cash. Welding extra inches just doesn't seem safe to me. But that's just my
_edit_
Again I don't know the set up on a Vmax but can't you use emulators and stiffer springs to solve handling problems?
I am drunk so maybe doesn't help. ____________________ Enjoy Life There's Plenty of Time to be Dead

Dear colinWall I dont ever remember saying I got a Vmax purely for its looks, I wish to make a few mods to my bike that will will enhance its performance, and at the same time improve its looks in my opinion.
Apart from the looks there are other benefits, along with R1 front forks comes the whole front end, R1 front disc's and the whole braking system, this in its self would be an improvement to the stoping power,
Sickpup & Bezzer many thanks for your help I think I might look at stepped yokes |
