Basically im 17 in about a month and want to get a bike but different people have been telling me different things. Ive been reccomended to get a 600cc bike when ive passed and get it restricted to 33bhp ( which is apparently the most you can have when your 17 after passing your test) but some one said that would only go about 65 mph max basically i want a bike which wont be too bad on insuance no more than £1500 and will reach around 100 mph. Also dont get a 125 then pass and get a 600 because you will have same problem and lose money on the first bike. Any info or suggestions would id be really greatfull.

Basically is it true after youve passed your full bike test when your 17 you have to have any bike restricted to 33bhp which wont even reach 70 or what ? Thanks

Dont get a restricted 600, from what ive gathered off here they are no faster to say a restricted 125, plus u have the weight disadvantage and insurance costs of the bigger bike.

I say get a restricted 125, you will pay less on insurance, if your tempted to take out the restrictors then you are less likely to die on a unrestricted 125 than a big 600.

Ive just bought an Aprilia RS125, its not restricted but it is nippy and is decent for learning on. as im fairly new to bikes myself Thumbs Up

Pretty sure a 600 would piss on it for torque and acceleration though.

Restrict a 125 to 33BHP?! What type of 125 are you thinking of?!

Any evidence of this?

I think you have 'restricted' and 'derestricted' the wrong way round.

Derestriction is faster Razz

A good 60% of riders, at a guess, flout the restriction law anyway. My bike has never seen restrictors, and it's 93BHP. Shifty

well i dont know much about bikes but i thought a 125 cc bike was only 17bhp but then what do i know can some one just say like what a bike normal/restricted what ever is llegal will do and how much insurance it will cost for a 17 year old own name and all that so like

125 - 70mph £800 etc

250 - 85mph £1300 etc etc etc

can some one just tell me what to do lol all i want is a decent bike which will do 100mph which is legal and wont cost too much on insurance ?

If you do your first bike test you can ride a bike of up to 33bhp, either as its original power or a more powerful one with restrictors in it.

I see no good reason why this shouldn't be able to do up to 90mph.

Your other alternative is to do your CBT and ride a 125 on L-plates for a while. This would do around 65mph. If you buy a cheaper, second hand 125, you are unlikely to lose much, if any money on it.

I personally think it is a total waste of time buying a 600cc bike then restricting it to 33bhp for two years. I would get one that produces 33bhp or thereabouts as standard. The insurance should be a good bit cheaper for one thing (at 17, insuring a 600cc bike will probably eat most, if not all of your £1500).

We can't give you insurance quotes, you'll actually have to phone people (gasp) to do that... Smile

A two-stroke 125 sportsbike will do about 90-95 derestricted, about 65-70 restricted.

I imagine a 33BHP bike would hit round about the 95-110 mark, (depending on how many cylinders in what arrangement the bike has) your mileage will vary.

14.6BHP is the legal limit for CBT holders over 17.

Personally I think your best bet would be to get a restricted 500cc twin like a GPZ500S or a CB500, the CB500 is more expensive, you can get some mint GPZ's for a low price nowadays.

Should see you to about 100mph but bear in mind it would probably hurt on a CB500.

You could also consider something like a BROS which makes 33BHP as standard and will probably feel a lot nicer than throttling an engine that was designed to produce more than that.

Also again personal opinion but doing 100MPH as a new rider isn't a good idea. Smile

QFT.

Get a 125 geared bike, ride around on your CBT for a bit, build up some no claims bonus.

An Aprilia RS125 is 33bhp derestricted, will do 105mph or thereabouts I believe, but is expensive to buy (relatively) and not cheap to insure. However if you ride it on a CBT it'll have to be restricted to about 15bhp.

33bhp is probably a trifle optimistic.

There is an added complication with very light bikes like the RS in that there is also a power:weight ratio restriction for new riders. This means that a heavily tuned up aprillia RS is still illegal to ride for two years after you pass your test.

Pansy. Wink

If you are looking to stay legal(ish), then I definitely wouldn't be looking at something with much more than 50 or 60bhp. Bikes with plenty of horses tend not to take so well to restrictors, and it can often make them unrideable. I'd like to see how a Hayabusa took to 33bhp.

There are exceptions to this rule of course; Bandits are classic restrictor bikes - you could easily find one with the restrictors already in, I expect.

Considered a 400? These take slightly better to restrictors, and they still retain some of that 'big bike' feel which you wouldn't get so much on an RS125. A 500 twin would be pretty good as well, depending on the power delivery you think you'd like; they are pretty sedate.

He doth speak wisely, young one. It's true, you don't want to be going massively fast within a day of having the thing, if it's all you've ever ridden (except your test bike). Otherwise you'll end up like me and stain your trousers accidentally popping a wheelie when you set off. Doh!

CBR125 - 65/70
NSR125 - Res: 65/70 Deres: 90/95

Probably looking at around 800 for the NSR and 600 for the CBR125, but I wouldn't quote me on that, I'm not an insurance broker.

Are you passing your test or getting a 125 now? If you're getting a 125 to ride around and pass test, consider a CG125 or similar, there's plently of time for nice shiny plastics later.

https://www.motorbikes.be/en/Aprilia/2004/RS%20125/

According to this site, 34bhp @ 11k rpm.

And as for the insurance, https://www.bennetts.co.uk go get a quote yourself. I have no idea what the insurance would be for you, but don't expect it to be cheap.

If I were you, I'd pass my test and buy a CB-1, should be fun enough to last me until the restriction period is up.
Very cheap too. Cool

Bought a RS125 when i turned 17, rode it for a year (and about a half) on CBT then passed my test, took the restrictors out and it was fine.

Average top speed will be around 90/95, if you push it (not recomended to do alot as rs125s have a bad rep for going pop, even if i havnt experienced this) fastest i had was 108 and that is easily enough for anyone new.
Thumbs Up

RS125 is also the largest physically (afaik) although the sound isnt as nice as the 4strokes.
