Hi all im new here Very Happy

Just a couple of questions really!

Right then ive always wanted to ride a bike but its always one of them things that ive put off because of money/parents etc...

Now i defo want to do it Laughing

Im 23 and been driving a car for the past 4-5 years, so I take it i'll be able to do the direct access? then i'd be able to drive and bike size?? bearing in mind ive never drove a motorbike before apart from a moped years ago! (in field Embarassed )

Also ive heard that when you do the lessons as part of of direct access they give you a head set so that the instructer can speak to you when your both riding? Problem is tho im deaf and although i can hear fine with my aids in, wouldnt be able to wear the head set any way around this??

Finally if i did do this and past etc anybody recemend a first bike as ive had no idea??? would be a cheap one at first maybe up tp 2K, what sort of bike would i be able to buy with this? tho i only one i would want would be one that looks like a superbike focking love them! Mr. Green something either a 500 or 600 etc.any pics?

It would only be a summer thing or on dry days my car would be my 1st means of transport, would this mean cheaper insurance?

Thank you so much for your help Very Happy Thumbs Up

>21 = DAS avalible but you can take 3 grades of test

one which is a light bike = 125cc and under FOREVER

one is another one but you are restricted to 33bhp for 2 years

the full one you can ride anything you want provided you can insure it

YOu still need a CBT compulsory basic training and a theory test before you can do a test

Yes a radio is used , maybe you could go to a School and see if they can wire something up , the one used on the test I recall had a standard head phone mini jack as most walkman's do these days a mate who was deaf had an aid with a headphone jack like that. Though its been years since I've seen him , and I'm not sure how hearing aids operate , maybe you can get a helmet with lots of padding on the inside so you can fit the hearing aids in as well? .

Nitro are a so so brand which works but use lots of padding maybe go to a bike shop try on a helmet and see if you can hear a walkman headphone through it with your hearing aid in (with the head phone inside the helmet also)?

first bikes:

CB/CBF500 (best in class)
GS500
GPZ500

Better ones

Hornet 600
Hornet 900

Good 33bhp bikes
535 virago

Good rat bikes

GT550.Gt750
NTV600/NTV650

I did the same thing myself when I was approaching 23. Id been driving cars since I was 17 and thouht they were the best thing since sliced bread - until I done my CBT!!

You need to get yourself to a few centres that cover CBT's and see what they say about the radio/hearing aid problem - you might find that they have had similar probs before and have kit to hand that can be used. Also many of these people are very friendly and will do as much as they can to help - so dont be worried about asking!

Until you have done your CBT and looked at some bikes then its difficult to reccomend one. A lot of people go for bikes like Suzuki bandits when they pass their test as they are reasonably cheap and you dont have to worry about dropping it etc. Have a look through the pictures section and see what kind of bikes you like, such as faired bikes/unfaired bikes and then get a beter idea of what you like. Also consider that some styles of bike will suit the purpose better than others - if you are using a bike to mainly commute then there are some good commuters out there, but if you are after track ridng or weekend blasting then there are race reps too.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it works out!

Wink

When I read that, I had to do a double take.....(apart from the age) it's just like the scenario I had!

My first bike - Hornet 600 and I love it! It's quick, comfy, easy to ride, maintenance is easy, doddle to keep clean, very reliable, and there's plenty about Thumbs Up

I have a '98 with a 16" front wheel which is supposed to make the turning in a bit quick, but never really found it to be an issue, but then i'm not known for my pace! Later ones had the 17" wheel.

I was going to suggest a ZXR400 but you are quite big.
6,2 and 16 stone is big but not unreasonable for a sports bike. We had a thread a while ago on here about rider weights and found there are some proper heavyweights on here with japanese sportsbikes.
Maybe a Honda CBR600/ Kawasaki ZXR600 99-2000 model would suit as a first sportsbike at the right price. They look the part.

I'm sure there would be a way of wiring up your hearing aid to the radio probably be better than the standard bloody things that you can't hear anyway.
you could prboably get a lid with a cut away section for the hearing aid, then attach a transmitter to your exhaust! Thumbs Up

If you're 23 I'd personally go for a 600cc. Something like a Yamaha Thundercat, CBR ('f' model I think) or ZX6F (F or G) would be fine as a first 'big' bike and they also look good for the amount of money. A decent 400 will cost you the same as a decent 600 (a pre 2000 one)

I originally wanted a 400 as my first 'big' bike after riding a 125 for a year, but that I had a go on my mate's 1998 CBR. Enough said.

There's definitely ways around the hearing aid problem: surf the net for a bit (or on this site, I'm sure it's come up once or twice) as there is a 'speaker' type jack that'll fit into your com which will allow you to keep your hearing aid in (providing you've got a modernish one that isn't huge). Basically the intercom will velcro to the inside of your helemt, near your ear.

Welcome Very Happy

Im training at the moment, having never ridden before my cbt in January this year. I'm going for either a cbr600f or a sv650s as they are sporty but forgiving compared to say an r6 or something similar.

I am learning on a gs500, 50 (ish) bhp makes it hard work when planning overtakes etc. Great to learn on but I personally wouldn't have one when I've passed.

As for the 400's, I did look into this as im fairly short (5ft4) and they suit my height but feel a bit too small to me. So as you're 6ft2 it may just feel like a mini moto to you Laughing

Best advice would be to go to your local dealer and try a few.

Just my two penneth anyhoo

A 500 is more than enough to safely execute an overtake. Chances are if you were to continue on a 500 twin after you've passed (CB/GS/ER5), you'll develop all the neccessary skills and experience to be able to overtake with half that power.

I'm currently riding a 33bhp restricted CBF500 (Honda's equivalent of the GS500), and I've never had any problems when overtaking.

You say you have only starting riding motorcycles since January. You wont pass your practical at the peak of your riding skill, the same goes for cars.

You're right. The only reason I said about the overtakes is that where I'm training they also run an advanced course - basically the bikes that regulary have advanced tuition are an r6, a gixxer 600, two fireblades and a gs500 - the gs has to do the most planning re overtakes in this instance. But no, you don't need the power of a 600 sports straight away - just my preference to have the power there if and when I want to use it.
