6hrs sat on a motorway is going to put a nasty flat-spot on your tyres. Are you sure it's cheaper than the train Question

I'd be temped to alter the route to include some A-roads. It may add 30 mins to your journey, but your less likely to get bored.

And it'll stop you getting so achy, spending more than an hour or so sat on a motorway is not fun, and your knees and wrists will start to really ache. Taking in some A roads will give you more of a chance to move around the bike and keep you from stiffening up.

Yeahh but sometimes motorways are best.

After living in Ireland where the scenery is great and the roads questionable, ie 4 -5 hours in a car to do 140 miles. (I kid you not, main road from Limerick to Dublin goes through lots of town centres.)

With a motorway on a bike, your going to make good quick progress. No stopping for roundabouts, or on constant look out for scameras like coming up the A1 (which I have done).

Agreed. It's what some of us from the North users group did on our trip to lands-end last weekend (we used the A46 I think). Squaring off the tyres is not so much of an issue if you have more road biased rubber fitted such as 020's, Road Attacks etc. If you have sports tyres such as 014's then as Cillitbang says, forget it, go by train.

well i intend to have a bit of a rest halfway when i stop for motion lotion and most probably get off the M1 for a bit somewhere

my tyres are dunlop 220 standard SV650 rubber,

the smallest amount of damp/cold road + give it a handful in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd and it spins all over the place fishtailing about, not enough grip to let the front come up so i doubt they'll wear away on the journey

Those tyres last for ages.... Mine even after 3000 miles looked unused and if a puncture hadn't ended their life I would prob have still got them on even after 8500 miles Laughing. There's reports on bcf of 10000 miles from them. A mere trip to London won't even bother them.

Personally I'd get some slightly stickier rubber on for summer as the performance of those dunlops is not great - add rain and you've already found out the consequences. Conti road attacks and Bridgestone 020's are the most popular for SV's.

i know i got my k5 in july and ive one 3600 miles on them and they're only just starting to look like they're being used

ive only noticed the lack of grip in the wet in the dry they seem fine (about 4 - 5mm chicken strips on the edges) although still no KD lol

i found my courtesy bandit650 more fun on roundabouts, it just seemed to fall over better had BT** on it (not sure of the number)

3600 miles is poor i know need to get out more

If you book the train a couple of weeks in advance then it's pretty cheap. If you are young enough then you could buy a young persons rail card and reduce the cost by another 3rd. I think they cost less than 20 quid a year so are well worth the money.

Now what you have to get the cheap fares is get singles as a opposed to a return. if you book a few weeks ahead you will get London to Leeds for 9.50 each way (thats without any travel card discounts). Takes about 2 and a half hours and a lot less in petrol.

Hope this helps.

I'm planning a 240 mile trip (Liverpool to London) on my bike, but if it all goes to shit National Express do an Apex Return (7 days in advance) for £36.

Takes ages on the coach, but goes practically door to door.

Blimey one run from London to Leeds is no big deal.
The cost will be less than train too unless you get some special deal - plus then you have your bike when you arrive.

Hope you know Leeds as it's confusing.
I only go every two or three years and they seem to move all the roads about or something Wink

What's the point in owning a bike if you're not going to use it to get from A to B?
