poor mileage from NSR

I have a 92 Italian import NSR 125F and just lately I seem to be getting a lot less miles from a full tank. Usually I was averaging around 102 miles (not sure if this is good) but today I find myself switching to the reserve in order to get it started and I have only done 62 miles since filling her up last.

Once I start her on reserve I can switch her back to normal and the bike will run so not sure if there is a problem somewhere??. Could it be that the bike is running a little rich? I dont get any smoke when she starts normally but when the choke is used I do get a considerable amount......well enough to get high, lol.

So there you go I am not sure whether I have a problem or not......maybe its just all the sitting I do stuck at flippin traffic lights.

sitting in the traffic would play apart in using more fuel. stopping and starting etc.

well I use her as a daily commuter through Birmingham City Centre so I do spend most of my time doing a hell of a lot of starting and stopping but would you say the fuel usage is still a little excessive?

is 102 miles a good amount from a full tank anyway? My boss/ mate says it is bad but other mates say it is good for a 125 so not sure what to think.

100 miles is normal . have a good smell around and check your fuel line , but very often it's due to carbonized piston chamber , clogged air filter , clogged carb . what you should do is cleaning air box foam, tank & tap (especially the filter) , carb (especially the strainer) . while your carb is off note which jets you have and tell me what you have .

hi all, sorry for the late response.

I booked the NSR in for a service which went through yesterday. I have the bike back today and they said they can't find anything wrong with the bike except that the rear wheel bearings will need replacing very soon. Other minor things were like there was a nut missing from the headlamp and that a few things needed tightening.

However, while I was riding it to the garage the gears made a crunch sound and the throttle seemed to tighten up and it caused the bike to stall. I put it into first but as I went to pull off the bike went about a foot in distance then had a loss of power and stalled again. It did this about four times then went as though nothing had happened.

Since this I have to admit the bike felt strange...as though tense. Sorry for sounding silly but as you all must know you get a sense about your own bike and know if something is not quite right, lol.

when in first its as though it wants to go straight into second after just a couple of seconds as the revs seem to be higher than usual.....about 6k revs just to get 10mph out of the bike, where as before I am positive I could get that on lower revs (I could be wrong). basically I feel as though I am having to go into third to get what I believe I could get from second before the crunch from the gears. The gears themselves are also feeling a little clumsy now.

I told the mechanic at the garage and he said he had checked it over during the service but he says it is fine although to me it just does not feel that way......it is not as smooth as it was.

Any suggestions?

by the way, sorry to go off topic onto another problem.....it has not been a great time for me....lots of bad luck. Went fishing Sunday and broke my pole

oh and to answer the other question, yep the garage i fill up at is on a hill (just at the top). I always fill up with premium if that helps also lol.

was your garage a honda specialist ? i doubt
this bike , if you have no acknowlegde on it , is tough to maintain correctly , so i suggest you show it to a real honda specialist .

the guys i took it to are honda authorised and have been awarded by Honda for the quality of work and for their services. i feel like i am banging my head up a brick wall with this bike and may just opt to part ex it for a new bike. I am new to bikes so my knowledge is pretty much minimal.

Think I will ask them to take another look when its in to have the rear wheel bearings replaced.

the rear bearing needs to be changed if your wheel has got play on side . i recommand to all my mates to buy a tool to lift the rear wheel , using it to lube te chain adjust the chain , changing rear break pads and plenty other works . i think you can buy a good one for 30 quids and a rear-front wheel around 40 quids .
by the way the bearings in the rear wheel are 6003 and 6203U and i much prefer to use waterproof on both side 6203UU & 6003UU because even with grease between these 2 water and dust come in . so i suggest , if it's necessary to change them , go to a bearing shop , buy the UU ones then bring them with the bike to the garage . you can also DIY if you feel able to , it's not so complicated , just need the wheel off
