The situation is actually a little more complex than meets the eye however as the bike was due to be sold to someone else. This person paid their deposit (£40) and filled in their address on the V5C, they have also taken section 10 from the document. However, the document has not been sent to DVLA and section 6 is filled in with their details. Section 8 has been signed by the buyer but not the seller (who happens to be the guy I bought it from's friend) and they have not signed section 9.

I bought an RS125 from a local seller but the V5C is in his friends name. Should I get in touch with his friend or with DVLA?

i would say the seller needed to request a new V5 from the DVLA before doing anything else or selling to anyone else.

Sounds like a whole can of worms there.

That's particularly badly explained, and I'm not about to get my V5 out so I can reference whatever you're talking about.

If you need the bloke to sign it so you can send it off, then sign it on his behalf.

I've done that before when the bike was in someone elses name.

Or is the V5 still in the person before the guy you bought it from's name? So even if you send it off it'll only send the real V5 to the person you bought it from?

Sounds like a right cock-up to me.
P.S you'll find it difficult to find anyone human to talk to at the DVLA.

Sorry for the example, there is an address in the new keeper's address box, and a single signature in the declaration box should I typex over these and fill them in for myself, signing both signatures at the bottom?
Alternatively I could leave the signature in place (where my own should go) fake a seller's signature and fill in my details in the new keeper's box after a little typex?

The second option sounds better.

I don't think they're too worried about the fraud side of it, as long as at the end of it you're the registered owner it's all good. However you go about it.

Probably not strictly legal, but meh.

The alternative is to pay £19 for them to send you another logbook exactly the same as the one they'd send you if you 'fraudulently' fill the old one and send it off.
