Yamaha Thunderace

Right well ive just turned 21 (last month) and been riding a CBR125 for a year. Got my DAS booked for 3rd June-6th June

Im looking at the bigger bikes and i like the look of the Thunderace, there is a 1000cc one going in blue and black 1999 model at my local dealership for £3,000, ive got £5,000 to spend

Milage is 4,680

What is your opinion on the Ace?

the ace is a highly underrated machine, Very quick, reasonably comfy (toured france last year, 2-up, camping with luggage. 2000 miles and no aches) and handles well.

It's not as pin-sharp as the R1, but definately worth a look.

£3000 for a '99 model is a little steep I think. I paid £1500 for a 98 model last year, although it isn't perfect cosmetically, and is a high mileage example.

I asked him what deal he would do me as my dad been buying bikes from him since he was 17 (now 42) he said i can have it for £2400 which i think is not a bad price

It's a pretty good bike, pretty powerful and reasonably comfortable etc.
Check insurance before you buy, it's a lot of power and insurance companys often load the premium for new / younger riders.
Also, take care with it, there's more than enough power there to catch you out. Personally I'd spend a few months on something less powerful first, but if you're determined to get a litre bike the Thiunderace is a good choice.

£2400 isn't bad, if it's got, say, under 20k miles on it, and is cosmetically tidy.

things to check:
EXUP valve. if it seizes, it's a pain in the ass, meaning either a new collector (very expesive, and a bit like hen's teeth these days from breakers), or losing it in favour of a full system, meaning you lose a lot of midrange power.

check the rad. can quite often be a bit mangled from road crap getting thrown up. If you're doing a lot of town riding, it can overheat if the rad's all blocked up.

chain and sprockets. 148bhp doesn't do much for extending chain life

oh, and you'll soon find out.. the Blue and Black ones are the fastest

A Word of warning


Thunderace drink oil when ridden hard, carry a liter of oil under the back seat with a funnel so when the oil light does comes on you can stick 500ml in (full mark to oil waring is 500ml), they are also know for a weak clutch which can chatter or worse case break up when doing fast drag starts which can be sorted by an oil modfication on the clutch hub that l my self have carry out and it sorted the problem.


Apart from the oil problem there great bikes very fast and powerfull (inducated 180mph, wheelies very easy in 1st and 2nd) great handdeling for a big bike and has a nice big comfey seat .


insurance for me when l got mine back when l was 18 was £580 TPTF with motorcycle direct.

thats a good price on insurance

as ever, bikes from a dealer are more expensive than if you buy private. I dont believe that bikes from a dealer are any better.
