Hi,

My dad was saying to me the other day that when he was 16, the law permitted him to ride up to a 250cc as a learner. He has said to me that he could still do so, as the government find it hard to revoke rights that people already have. Not that he's thinking of doing it, just saying that he can.

Obviously he'd get pulled every day, and would find trouble getting insured - but do you think he would still be allowed? Personally i'm skeptical, but maybe someone will tell me otherwise! Wink

I thought it was him with a wig (or hair dye and a strange cut).

Who is it then?

When that law was introduced everyone with an L-plate and a 250 had to sell their bikes, which became worthless overnight. Fortunately I'd sold mine a few months before and my brother had already crashed his to destruction.

It was one of the unfairest bits of legislation ever passed, and showed the govt's contempt for bikers.

Although to be fair, the death toll of learner riders after the GT250X7 and 250LC came out was becoming a bit rediculous.

"Ah, I'm 17 today. I know! I'll go out and buy myself a 115mph looney-tunes 2-stroke with a vicious, razor thin powerband and a bendy frame, slap a couple of L-plates on it and see if I can ride like Agoustini. I know I have never even sat on a motorbike before but I'll pick it up as I go along."

The X7's and LC's were so cool, hence the reason why had one of each at one point

Hi

250 learner law survived another 15 years or so in Northern Ireland.

While early 80s bikes might well have been a fair amount slower, they also tended to handle far worse, have even worse brakes and the power delivery of the 2 strokes was far less learner friendly than newer stuff.

All the best

Keith

At 16 you could only ride a 50cc, same as now, you couldn't ride a 250cc until you were 17, in 1981 the rule was changed to the present 125cc limit.

I tried to campaign against it by putting a half page advert in superbike mag to raise a petition, it got very little response from any bikers so I gave up. (In fact I got slagged off for doing it by members of MAG)

The bike that killed more people than any I know was the Kawasaki KH250 triple.

I want an X7, they pwn the 250 modified class of earlystock racing.

And my Dad had a 250lc on L plates. But I think alot threw them at the scenery.

Then people went and put 350 barrels on their 250s, and bingo, an illegal 350, but very unlikely to be found and/or caught.

Is that the one with 'dynostart' where the alternator spins backwards to form a starter motor?

Got to love the 'ram-air' air cooling on the cylinder head too. (which appears to consist of a shroud, preventing air moving over the cooling vanes in all but one direction.).

Whenever that pic was taken with you and Wave on that SE pub meet, you had a shaved head. Now you have a full head of hair, I think your hair grows v. quickly.

Either that or I have no sense of time and/or mine grows very slowly.

Obviously seen as a selling point on the lower capacity bikes.
