Some of you met Mark at the weekend, he occasionally comes on BCF.
I thought I would share the race report I wrote from his performance at the weekend.

02/05/06

For immediate release

Mark Gomersall finally opens his championship scorecard on his debut.

Dartford motorcycle racer Mark Gomersall, finally got his racing career of to a start, and collected some championship points at the BMCRC Rookie 600 event at Mallory Park in Leicestershire during the Bank Holiday weekend.
After breaking a thumb in the opening round at local Brands Hatch circuit in practice 6 weeks ago, this is was Gomersalls debut race. The other racers had already completed 2 weekends worth of racing (8 races).

Starting at the back of the grid, Mark had a respectable opening race, riding his Suzuki GSX-R 600 very smoothly and finished 19th, from a pack of 27.

“I was taken by surprise somewhat by the new chicane, which I only encountered during the warm-up for race one” Mark commented.

Race two was another learning experience for Gomersall as he worked hard moving up and down the pack, eventually finishing 20th.

“It was a hard day on a circuit. I realise how important the start is. I think I have the pace to move through the pack, but need some good starts to get clear” said Mark.

Overnight the rain had come down hard and was very intermittent during the morning.

Race 3 was declared dry, although there were definitely still wet patches on the circuit. A steady race saw him come home in 19th place.

As the 4th and final race approached the rain was still very intermittent. An instinctive choice to run on wet tyres, even though he had never raced on them before, combined with an excellent ride, saw him move up to 12th place by lap 4.With a few fallers and some slippery moments, Mark rode hard and finished the race in 13th places, collecting 3 championship points, opening his scorecard.

“During the rain on the Monday afternoon, we decided to run with the wet tyres and stick to that decision, where other rookie riders were still debating what tyres to run with right up the last minute. This proved a good choice, one which saw a 13th place finish and a hard fought but very enjoyable 3 points in race 4!!” Mark said

The next outing will be at his local track, Brands Hatch on 13/14 May.

“I'm counting down the days and planning to hopefully make a successful move on some of the front runners.” Mark included.

We often 'remind' him about the feet. he claims it's because their so bloody big!

the thumb is ok, still not a massive amount of strength in it, but enough to grip the bar!
He only had the cast removed last Monday and did 1/2 Brands trackday straight afterwards, and then Mallory the day after!

Watch out for him at Brands, I think he fancies his chances.

But it's his outside foot which doesn't matter and plenty of riders sit their outside foot like that just for comfort when hanging off, just a better observation. Razz
