Just made a post another topic about this very subject.

I got thrown off at 30mph at the weekend when i was riding pillion. My £699 leathers got damaged, the seams burst, the rider (who was wearing a 120quid set of leathers) had no damage whatsoever.

Had various Alpinestar and never been that impressed by the quality.

Most have had problems before I would expect.
However their stuff does fit me better than some other brands.

Yep, was the zip that went on mine.
Oh and mine were the original ones with the clicky heel plates, that also went.

I think zips have been a problem on many boots. I had problems with zips on 3 pairs of Sidi boots. Mad

My boots (SMX & SMX+) were always so so comfy, but the first pair didn't stand up to daily use and the second pair (+'s) have had such a n easy life i'd be upset if they didn't last.

2 years ago their gear rocked, hence why i got a jacket from that era - my GPS boots are still going after 15,000 miles of all weather use! But the quality of their budget suits are shocking - it's hard like cardboard! HG stuff is cheaper and more supple. I definately don't like the feel of the new SP2 gloves.

Incidentally my experience has been with their higher priced sports gloves and boots.

I've had a pair of SMXs for four years now, they have been through a serious crash and protected my ankles a treat.

I had had the velcro replaced on them, but otherwise they are still in superb condition. They are comfortable, warm, reasonably waterproof (even though they're not supposed to be).

I also have an A* textile jacket, admittedly I only paid £50, but it is brilliant. So toasty and waterproof, it's light so comfortable to wear off the bike as well.

I had some GP boots years ago and wore them till the soles fell to pieces. Bought some SMX boots to replace them and took them back within a month due the the velcro on the zips tearing off. Had them replaced and the same thing happened again, but before I got chance to return them again I was knocked off the bike. 30 mph crash with just tarmac abrasion burst the inseam along the big toe on my right foot. Not buying any more A* boots.

I now have some Daytona Roadstar GTX and they are fantastic compared to the A*. Makes you realize how uncomfortable they were too, on lazy days at work I can wear them all day without any hassle, other than looking like a line dancer. Wink

A lot of the gear that survives the best in Ride test in Alpine star gear.

I've got boots and winter gloves from them and have had no problems, apart from the sizes being not right, ie i'm a 9 but in alpine star im a 10. My hands are normaly medium in alpine star im a large etc.

The only problem I'm having with my boots is that the right one squeaks every step, so I have to walk with a limp to avoid being stared at in a strange way.

I got AlpineStar SMX boots, GP Pro gloves and two piece leathers. The leathers fitted me best out of the ones available in HG, so got the gloves and boots to match (tart Laughing ).

I thought you could always tell the quality of the leather by the standard of white leather used as this is the most difficult colour to produce in leather. I've not had any problems with any of my gear.

The missus has HG own brand leather / suede two piece, and alpine star gloves. No problems with them either.

My Alpine DryStar textiles and Spidi jacket are also pretty well built and keep me dry unlike my Buffallo jacket which afforded no wet weather protection at all. Thumbs Down

I think that most stuff nowadays offers pretty much the same level of protection and quality (to an extent), and you can do quite well with HG own brand or choose something branded like Dainese. I personally would only really trust leathers to protect myself once in a spill then I would replace them. If zips are falling off, seams fraying or waterproofs not keeping you dry, take them back and get them replaced. If manufacturers get a shed load of returns, they will have to do something about it as it costs them customers and eats into their profit.

I'm about to buy my own leathers in a few weeks. I'm not looking for anything flash. Not looking for a one piece as I'm not gonna be on a sportsbike, I might get draggin jeans, but what jacket do you reccomend? Looking for all weather preferably?

--> If not alpinestar, who'se the best to go for?
