I remember as a young lad growing up (around late 80's early 90's era), on a satruday afternoon along with nearly every football result on the news would be a breif summary of the hooliganism/number of arrests that took place at any match.
It almost seemed to be a regular spot on the evening news - 'Another day of football has been mired by violence, it seems a small minority.....blah blah blah'.

Am I right to think that the authorities have succesfully stamped out regular violence, especially at the top level of the game or is this simply an effect of big money PR working for the glossy global image of the Premiership?

I read an article about the prospect of violence in Germany 2006, apparently the Italian Serie A league are having big problems at the moment with hooligans and the Polish are the big worry in Germany.
However England fans have a quite rightly notorious reputation from their history.

What are peoples thoughts on this? I like to think England fans will be the least of the trouble in Germany but we have the added England V Germany rivalry to mix things up a bit.

I wont pretend I'm big on this topic but I was watching a programme the other week on the up coming world cup:

Basically they briefly talked about the days of the past where, like you stated, hooliganism was rife but that our football culture has changed a lot for the better (obviously not a complete change though).

They were more worried about the world cup due the our past reputation, some countries still see us as hooligans and will want to go one better ('they think they're tough, we'll show them'). The problem being that, even if the brits are well behaved, a skinful of booze and the taunts of foreign supports will often bring out the worst in people...

Personally I think some violence is inevitable, it's sadly part of who we are as a species. I just hope the authorities can do their best to keep the known trouble makers out of the picture and the fans in a good mood. The good thing about the world cup for me is that the roads are prime for a ride and the beaches aren' as full!

I get the impression its a lot better than it has been in the past.
Especially in the Premiership, however when clubs are abroad things still happen.

Wether its the travelling english supporters, the home supporters or a mix of the two who kick stuff off i don't know.

It was no coincidence that football violence went down dramatically at the same time as ecstasy started to become very popular in the late 80s and early 90s.

They attempted to stamp it out with the use of seperation fences as previous there were mixed crowds. These gates have been removed at Swansea now I beleive and they had no hassle, or they had no media coverage of any hassle.

However it is still around I know a couple myself and they are regularly found to have had a feud at football. It is however quite rare now and kept very quiet. I think this is due to the increase of life destroying weapons in commercialism. I mean would you like an organised ruck with some guys for a laugh if you knew the other guy had a knife or gun in his back burner?

It is indeed still active, not as it once was. But Most Major clubs in England still have some sort of firm. The main ones in the Premier league are West Ham, Spurs and Man UTD. My club for hooliganism ( Bolton ) was quite active when we were away in Europe and for the above clubs. So its still there.

Hence this site as an example

If you mean literally then your a bit of a stupid prick. How many of these hooligan's have you actually met?

I'm related to one who frequented an (in)famous South London club. Him and all the other's like him I met, who held job's of varying respectibility and power, were all utter knob's. I've never come across a bunch of people who are so sub-human it's beyond comprehension, I respect people that skive off and claim benefits more than these bunch or reatard's. Luckily the stupid fucker I'm related to is locked away.

Look out for Germany Vs Poland. The Polish are some mental football hooligans.

Snippet, ''German police arrived halfway through to break it up and thankfully no knives were used - just baseball bats - but there is a fear it was a warm-up for the real event this summer.''

I think that while in Germany we should keep our heads down, the City of Nurnberg were we will be playing has some scary Natzi styled Hooligans who cant stand the English. So having been involved in a few rucks with Bolton over the years, i suggest we keep our heads down round there. Not really into it anymore, because alot of my mates and Dad's mates are now spending a good few years behind bars for violent disorder at football matches, its not big and its not clever, and this coming from somebody who's dad was heaviley involved with it all through the 70's 80's 90's up untill 2003 where we saw the worst violence ever, in Bolton Train station between over 200 football hooligans from both Manchester United and Bolton.

Man utd !! are you sure BWFC ?
Ive never seen any trouble there.
I reckon there will be trouble in stockport today if county go down.
I think all seater stadiums and most big clubs having 67-70% of tickets being season tickets has greatly reduced the chance of it kicking off.Security cameras too.
Cant say what goes on away from the grounds though.I reckon most of it is media hype and bullshit from bulletheads.

I think it has calmed down alot.

My sisters best friends dad used to be part of the chealsea thugs (cant remember what it was called) and has some ridiclious story's.

He is tattooed up skin head etc and loads of scars. He said they would beat the shit out of rival fans or get beaten the shit out of by them.

They would bottle each other, use bats etc. Sounds really bad but i think most of it has stopped now. Plus he's like 45 so too old to go around beatin people up. Laughing

Greatmoored! United have one of the most active firms in the league, their away support is fantastic, and they have alot of hooligans in their away followings. This was the last big ruck between United and Bolton. Copied and pasted from www.hooligans.cz

A huge fight broke out between more than 150 rival football fans at Bolton railway station -- leaving dozens of passengers terrified.

More than 100 Wanderers supporters are believed to have spilled out of nearby pubs to fight with a 60-strong Manchester United mob following the teams' 1-1 draw at the Reebok Stadium. There were 12 arrests, including one for possession of an offensive weapon, following the battle and one man was taken to hospital with a head injury. Rail staff cowered behind their counters and passengers looked on in terror as United fans got off a train from Manchester and charged across a walkway from the platform below. They were met by a crowd of Wanderers fans and a brawl broke out. The station was a scene of chaos following the fighting, with blood splattered across the floor and walls.
