Ok so here the story goes, I bought the bike back in april for £900. Since then I have spent over £1000 keeping it running and fixing parts all the time.

My piston and rings have now just gone and im wondering whether its worth fixing. Its an 03 aprilia rx50, 15000km on the clok and in dam good nick, except the engine.

If I do decide to fix it the next question is, do i spend 100 odd pound putting a new 50cc piston and rings back on, or do i spend 160 and bore it to an 85cc?

Cheers guys, Tom

if you are sick of things going bang keep it at 50cc as it should be more reliable

Fit the one that will have better resale value.

cheers guys, well i was planning on putting an 85cc kit on it soon anyway. So now would be a good time to do it. The only downside with that is that i would have kept the 50cc kit for a prrospective buyer when i came to sell. Im even considering a 2nd hand rx125 engine to go in it. That way i can keep the bike for another year, and it wud cost a fraction of the price of a new bike Confused

Do you think boring it out is going to improve the problems with the engine?! If anything, it will make them worse.

If you want a 125, fix it and cut your losses, and buy a 125!

Did you read the replies? both sway to not fitting the 85cc kit. The 85 cc kit will make it hard to sell, putting a 125lump in the bike will make it nearly impossable to sell.

RX engine is very different and will not fit easily.

All the best

fix it, sell it when u want to get a 125

increasing engine capacity, swapping engines is more like mad science experiements than sensible solutions to practical problems.

I think the only people who should do such things are people who know what they are doing and enjoy it when things go wrong and they have to sort them out.

There was once a survey done on here about reboring 50cc bikes to something bigger. No one had done it without the engine going bang shortly after. I suspect this is because the cooling system couldnt get rid of the extra heat. Im guessing as to why they go bang, but they do go bang.
