Hi, I'm a complete noob and have been fixated on buying an rs50 for my 16th, (4 months away) or a tzr50, or for that matter any sports replica. I've read many posts on here and the main message i'm getting is to buy a cheap old ped and wait until i'm 17 as 50s are crap straight forward. Should i take that advise? If so what bike should i get? I want to go fast as all people my age do, and wil probably be riding it de-restricted legal or not Razz Ped or bike, it's all good, not too interested in the trial bikes likes sends though.
Help will be much apreciated! thanks. Crumz

I'd reccomend getting a DT50 or similar.

Can be got for not much. Crash better than the sports style ones.
Don't lose out that much on top speed. If you want more you can always get a bore kit or similar anyway.

Ah, just actually re-read your post and realised you mean 'trail' bikes, not trials bike (skimmed over it). Well, they are the best option in my opinion.

You might not look like such a tart on an old DT, but you'll be a non-tart that has £1k in ya' back pocket Smile.

So how much have you seen dt50s going for? The new ones look pretty nice! But i live in nw london, would they still just be great to ride? do you know how much it would cost to insure one? What exactly is a bore kit, heard of it thousands of times but still don't know! Would a bore kit show that the bike's not restricted? As a friend drove his runner de-restricted for a whole year with not even one problem. thanks a lot G.

I would recommend a supermoto, basically a trail bike but they have smaller road tyres on them. It would be better on the road than a trail bike as dont have the knobbly tyres. Iv got a 2004 Rieju mrx 50 trail bike, can get about 50mph with only derestriction and it costs £333 to insure (would probably cost you more as you are in london) Most 50cc trail / supermotos are good, basically the same engines just with a different manufacturers name on it.

In London, a DT50, or any other trails bike for that matter, would be gone in about 6 seconds. I recommend an automatic moped; less attractive to thieves, and cheap and easy to maintain (besides 2 stroke oil).

hmmm, thanks guys. I see the good points and bad points for each bike now, the only problem is that each one of you recommend a different bike! How hard is it to steal a bike anyway?> aren't there security thingys like locks and alarms? And why would a thief steal a 50cc bike when there would probably be 600 cc ones just around the corner!? I get your point though, mnaybe i should just go with a moped, they're nice and cheap AND common Smile Do any of you know anything about the yamaha aerox? Do you know any better mopeds?

they will try anythink 2 nick a bike. geared 50cc and geared 125 would get nicked more than peds, if u get a bike or ped make sure u got a decent alarm not one off them cheap ebay ones, make sure u got your stearing lock on and have a good chain and lock it 2 comethink good. ppl just go round with bolt cutters and nick bikes and put them into vans so try and not park your bike out side 2 often or if u have 2 like when u go 2 work park it were theres load off ppl around

50cc bikes are normally taken by opportunists, basically chavs out for some joyriding in the local park as they are easier to ride. A 600 would be most likely taken by a gang who steal bikes for a living, they wouldn’t really bother with a 50 which they wouldn’t make much money out of it.

As they are usually knicked by opportunist thieves, a decent lock used sensibly should be ok for a smaller trail bike. While bigger bikes can find 'pro' thieves getting a lot more creative.

Ok, thanks a lot guys, so at the moment it seems like a supermoto 50cc is the most likely to get stolen, considering the fact that i live in an area that is filled with little chavs (saw a kid that looked about 12 riding a moped on the pavement the other day!). OK, so it's either a trail or a moped (i can pay for insurance, helmet n evrything else with the 1k i have!) I saw one moped on a thread in here (i think iit wwas a moped anyway) called a malaguti, looks seriously unusual - but i guess for that reason it would probably get stolen as well? - or could i get away with that Smile Any other suggestions on which model bike i should get? thanks.

I said it all in the PM but insurance (forgot that bit haha)

Insurance with MCE cost me £290-ish

Really not alot to insure I don't think for what it is.

well u might as well buy a dna 50. looks like a sports bike but its an auto and if its derestricted u will get about 55 out off it. but if u got money 2 burn u can add a 70cc kit , pipe ect but theres no point tuning a 50 coz with the money u gona spend tuning a 50 u can buy a 125 runner. thats when u turn 17

I can't try and dissuade you from getting the RS50 enough, its a complete waste of capital you could be spending on things that will be lasting you (like protective gear).

You have to change gear every milisecond, a ped will go faster than it usually. A restricted rs50 is so slow its dangerous, and the derestricted one isn't much better.

Get a DNA or a Gilera, anything auto, with this little capacity gears are pointless.

Anyway, twist'n'goes are fun and if your planning on upgrading to a 125 at 17... alot cheaper! Wink

thanks a lot everybody, now i'm for sure that i won't be buying a super moto, so at the moment it's a dna or a gilera runner or any other automatic moped. What is ncb?!? you can ride a 500cc bike at 17!?!? Anybody here planning on selling a dna 50? anybody know where i can get one from (preferably in london)? And how much would you guys say a reasonable price for a bike is (considering the fact that i won't be riding it)? Thanks, crumz.

yes u can ride a 500cc bike at 17 but u will need 2 do your theory test and practical test ect and the bike must be restricted 2 33bhp, if u do the 33bhp u can ride any cc as long as its restrricted 2 33bhp
