According to Bike magazine, the european courts have passed a law that will change the ages that licenses can be attained.

the main point of this is that DAS courses will be changed from the age of 21 to 24.
As we have to follow these law changes, how long untill they come into effect in the UK?

There was also mention of 17 year olds having to stick to 15bhp 125 machines for two years and then 45bhp for 2 years before being allowed a license.

I will have to take time off work to do my DAS, was hoping i could put it off for a while as i only just started, but i cant be doing with waiting till im 24!

2011 / 2012.

Not sure if it's completely done deal yet, last I heard it had been recommended (by the council of ministers) that the EU parliament vote on it (and accept it) without bothering to discuss it. But I don't know if that has actually happened yet.

If you read MCN, there's been posts about this for months.

Also protest meetings etc.

Yeahh DAS at 24, 125cc on Ls, pass your test you can only ride a 125 for 2 years (Guess everyone will go full power Aprila RS125).
After 2 years (ie minimum age 19), you can then take another test a 45bhp test. If you pass that then your 45bhp for 2 years then your full power.

Thus minimum age for full power is 21.

Unless its enforced it'll be the same farceicle 33bhp situation, counts for piss all...

The legislation got through a backdoor, at night wearing camoflaged cloaks, its utter bullshit as well the politicians know, because its the only way it could get through without any real debate or way of people standing up to say no..

Makes you wonder how many other bits of legislation they can get through... there allot of nob ends in the eu who want bikes banned alltogether..

Thumbs Down

As one of the people who sent emails to their MPs at Sadie's request, I've since been forwarded this letter from the Minister for Transport.

Quote:

Dear Gareth,

Thank you for your letter dated 7th april, enclosing correspondence from your constituent Mister James, regarding the Third EC Driving License Directive and its potential impact on motorcyclists.

The member states of the EU reached political agreement on the text of a proposed directive on driving licences at the Council on 27th March 2006. The text agreed was changed in only one respect from that discussed at previous Transport Councils. this was the extend the maximum period of adminstrative validity from 10 years to 15yrs. The UK can accept this provision, but it is unlikely to avail itself of it even if other Member States choose to do so.

The UK tried hard to get other Member States to agree to the amendments about those parts of the Directive relating to motorcycle licenses, however we found absolutely no support for our position even though I raised th issue personally with the Presidency and Transport Ministers from other States. However, the Directive contains measures which will help significantly to combat fraud and to improve road safety, for all road users including motorcyclists. This is why we decided to abstain rather than to vote against the measures as a whole although we did record our objections strongly in the minute statement. No other member state associated itself with my minuted objection.

I remain concerned about the provisions with respect to staged access to the larger motorcyclists for young riders: I believe that these particular measures as proposed are too complex and too rigid, and that they are likely to achieve little if any improvement in road safety. I and officials persistently sought amendment to these measures to reflect our concerns. it became increasingly clear to us that there was no support for the improvements we sought to obtain either from other member states or from the European Parliment. I have shared this appreciation with motorcyclists' representatives on several occasions.

We can now reasonably expect that the provisions of the proposed new Directive will be adopted by the institutions of the European Union in the course of 2006, so that we expect on present indications to have to implement the new requirements in UK law and practise by 2012.

I am aware that some motorcyclists are pressing for the European Parliment to reopen the issue and are being encouraged by a tiny minority of anti-EU MEP's. This would be a serious mistake as the majority feeling in European Parliment is that the Directive does not go far enough in restricting access to motorcycles and reopening the issue is likely to make matters considerably worse.

I remain keen to keep open constructive discussion with the representatives of motorcyclists and road safety groups, and with industry, on how best to bring the new requirements into UK practise. In due course, once the new measures have been adopted by the EU institutions, we shall undertake formal consultations on this as on other aspects.

Stephen Ladyman.

What worries me most about this is that Ladyman (!?!) actually admits that it is a law that he and his department do not want and do not believe is in our national interest, but are powerless to put a stop to.

I'm forced to ask for the umpteenth time, what the frakk does the EU actually do for us, apart from crap like this?

Am I the only person who thinks that if the method of getting a liscence is too complex, people will simply not bother getting a liscence at all?

tbh, If i was going to be 17 in 2012 I would just get on with riding the bike, and sod all the rings I'm supposed to jump through. Of course if your not getting the liscence why get insurance? and then why tax? heck, why even bother getting a proper registration?

Its also a little worrying in his letter where it says

to me Confused
