right a "friend" has been fooking unorganised and his bike is due its MOT on 9/05/06. problem is it needs a front tyre fitting to pass, so its going to be a close call to get it fitted and do the MOT. my question for my "friend" is, is there any automatic repocusions for not getting it MOT'ed on that date like with tax?
i know that if my "friend" rides it without a MOT it will void his insurance

Been riding my bike around for a week now without an MOT it expired on 21/4.

Just got it done today however, you get fined £60 if you get caught with the police.

There is no actualy way of catching you other than the police, but you cant tax the bike without it so you will have to get it done eventually. Thumbs Up

Which does beg the question that if he needs a new front tyre in order for his bike to pass the MOT, then he must be running around with a knackered front tyre as well. I can just see it now if he gets stopped or has an accident - no MOT, bald front tyre, invalid insurance...

But its worth remembering the Police do sit on the side of roads with number plate recognition equiptment and that will tell them the MOT is not current. The realy bad news now is they have the power to take the vehicle and if you don't pay within so many days it will be crushed, you will also get pionts and a fine........Ask your "friend" is it worth the risk??

not worth taking the risk, i think my "friend" was more concerned what if there was no other option to have no MOT for a couple of days as the bike is used for commuting. ie couldn't get a tyre fitted. however he got one put on yesterday as the local bike shop had the exact one in stock.
all that is needed is to get it MOT'ed on mon/tues

Nope.

They can only tell if the vehicle has a current computerised MOT, and as there were still old style MOT's being issued until the end of March it is entirely possible that there are vehicles around with almost 12 months left on an old style hand written MOT.

You can legally ride/drive a vehicle to a pre-booked MOT appointment with no MOT. I know I rode my dads bike to the MOT place and wanted to check the legalities before doing so.

Interestingly that is not actually true. The statement is "may" void your insurance. Basically it was a loophole for insurance companies to get out of claims. I will check exact dates etc but there was a test case a few years ago where the judge found in favour of the claimant against the insurance company. He had no mot and so they didnt pay up. It was argued successfully that the mot is only valid for the day it is done so in fact it is not a legal requirement. Cool

It actually states on the MOT form something like.. it doesnt mean the vehicle is road worthy or road legal or something to that effect.

Now thats a different matter and would certainly be a big issue as faults had been identified prior to the vehicle being driven. Cool

...Only when driving/riding to the MOT station where the vehicle is booked into... so if his 'freind' hadn't managed to get the front tyre done, he couldn't drive it anywhere other than to the MOT station if he had let the existing MOT run out... I think I've fitted 'MOT' in that paragraph a bit too much...
