which ones, why, what price, where from?
which one/s do you have what do you think of them?
How far have you been in them / what's the longest you've worn it?
How did you get on with it?

I'm looking for a back protector to go under leathers (which I don't have yet) getting the BP first so I can get a jacket to fit over it comfortably.

I have no idea on what's best for what budget etc.

any info is good as the BMF show is in 2 weeks an I suspect there will be bargains to bed had there.

simple Thumbs Up

Know Stowaway ( https://www.webbikeworld.com/r3/back-protector/knox-stowaway/knox-stowaway.htm ). About £60 I think.

Always wear it on trackdays, rarely wear it on the road - I'm lazy and forgetful. Tis flexible (can be rolled up to store) so is fairly comfortable, though I wouldn't say it was exactly designed with my shape in mind and I do find it a little annoying if I want to twist my head round to look over my shoulder, it seems to push my shoulder armour up a little so the chin of my helmet catches on it a bit. I'm sure I'd get used to that if I bothered to wear it but I just don't tend to bother for the road.

I was wearing it both times I crashed on trackdays, don't know if it made any real difference but it certainly didn't do any harm.

I got a kidney belt thing off ebay, its acutally good to ride it, keeps your back warm and supports it on long journeys (200miles is the longest i went in it, inc the cat and fiddle and the m6)

But back protectors, had one in my jacket, was a right pain in the arse and doubt it would have helped allot.. so i'd say fit is very important..

Ive read several times a rubbish/ill fitting back protector can be dangerous..

If you have a bit to pay for leathers its worth getting some made, crowtree e.t.c. £700 they start at i think, that and some good padding in there will probably be better imo...

I think T.C when he used to post, would recommend a soft form of protector, something like Schoeller Keprotec. The hardened armour is capable of putting excessive pressure on the spine/back of the neck, IIRC.

I got a nox back protector ( well a body armour suit actually )

I bought it from that motorcycle clothes shop on that roundabout on the a40 ( Sorry but I just cant rember it at the moment, Ill try and rember later but somone else probably knows about it, Its a very busy roundabout and the a40 goes under it )

It cost me £120 or somthing near that ( this is a full body armour kit rember ) and its brilliant, very comfy, Feel alot more safer and its never botherd me on long rides ( I often ride pretty much all day on weekends )

They do get a bit hot in the summer but its not uncomfortable, not yet anyway.

In my opinion and i've always used them, however they make you swet.

Honestly the pattern of swet matches to the mm, the shape of my back protector.

I have 2 back protectors one for my leathers, one for my textiles.

I have the type of back protector that fits into the pocket in the back of both my summer and my normal bike jacket. I find them very comfortable but not 100% sure how effective they would be in a crash but as posted before it can’t hurt.

I would go for a more substantial back protector but I just cant find one the right scale. At 6’2 I am not tall for a rider but I have a 54” chest (and ate a lot of pies) and just cant find one that fist comfortably.

All that said I am taking a very close look at the “airbag” jackets as they may well be just the ticket for a pie eater wanting a little more protection without sacrificing all day riding comfort. Although I am yet to be completely sold on the idea it’s worth a good look imho.

I have a Knox Contour bp which I brought from motorcycle essentials in cannock for £80 reduced from £100. Very comfortable (normally worn with my leather 1 pc for 6 - 7 hours at a time and no problem) do make you hot though. I know mine was reduced because there is a new one coming out with air vents so may be worth a look if it's out now.

I have some version of a Knox that came with my Bering jacket. Fits in the protector pocket at the back. I barely notice that it's there, despite it being quite bulky, and it certainly makes me feel more comfortable and safe.

It makes carrying a rucksack full of shopping quite comfortable too!

I have a Dainese one that I bought a few years back. I've ridden for hundreds of mile in it before, without problem but I was very careful when I bought it, to make sure it fits properly. Mine is the hard flexible type, makes me look like a ninja turtle Rolling Eyes

I made sure that mine just covers the base of my spine when on the bike and doesn't push up under my lid. I'd recommend one as it fits under textile and leather and is very comfortable, if a little warm in summer.

Cheers

Grim
