just about to book a test after my next lesson, i have a 125 gy panther trail bike and the shop i got it from will give me 1000 as a trade in! i was looking at a suzuki bandit 1200cc, i know thats big but ill have to get it restricted for i think 6 months after i pass. ive now saw a yamaha super tenere 750cc, its more like my own bike just much bigger. i initially didnt want to go with another trail bike fro comfort on long journies, i also like the look of the bmw 650f or f650?

as ill need to have them restricted anyway, whats a good idea? keep the 125 untill i am unrestricted? or buy the likes of a big bandit or the yamaha? thing is the yamaha is a private sale and id have to buy soon and then id have to sell my gy after i pass? a lot of cash just to keep in storage i think its a 5 week wait for tests and obviously may not pass!

so confused, any advice?

cheers

Steve

Hi,

Are you doing the restricted access test? If you are then you will have to wait a bit longer than 6 months before your restrictions are up, theres a sticky at the top of the 'New Bikers' section that explains all the different licences. For the amount of time you will be restricted theres very little point in getting something like a 1200 bandit and choking it to death, especially when theres a 600 version that will probably take the restriction much better. There are a lot of bikes out there so don't tie yourself down to the suzuki or the yamaha until you have had a good look at your options. remember that you will be restricting the bike to 33bhp, so perhaps a bike with an original power figure would be a better buy for now.

I'd say if you want a Bandit and you're taking your A2 licence then get a 600. I have a 600 Bandit which is restricted to 33bhp and it's taken to it really well. But a 1200 Bandit restricted to 33bhp would be choking it too much I think. Also how old are you? Younger riders will probably have a lot of trouble insuring a 1200 Bandit.

You will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years after you pass your test, not 6 months. Unless you're doing your direct access, in which case you take the test on a 500cc machine and you can ride anything after that. But since you mention restriction I'll assume you're taking the test on a 125.

Get a restricted 600 Bandit, ride it for two years, derestrict it, ride it for a bit more, and if / when you get bored of it after that, then get a 1200 Bandit or another bigger bike.

ill have to look into it but i know its a bit different here in northern ireland, as fas as im aware you do your theory test then you can book your bike test, theres a period after passing that your restricted but i dot know how long, could be a year alright! i know ill find a bike i like but dont want to keep changing! im fine on my 125 its just that its maxed a 60mph and any gradient at all back down to 50! its great if the roads are clear but you cant overtake a car thats traveling at 50mph etc a bit of a pain just!

was just looking at a bmw 650 cs, well impresed!

big trailies can be very comfortable on longer journeys, and many companies are going down the big trail variation route, like the V-Strom, Multistrada, Varadero etc...

Think North and South are same for 33bhp rule.

In the republic there is no DAS. Everyones 33bhp for 2 years.

And the standard of driving in the south is crap, because of the learner issues. Ie fail your driving test and you can drive a car un accomponied as a learner.

Update:

Irish Law: NB looks like you can ride 33bhp as a learner, pass your
test then you stay 33bhp for 2 years, but no L plates and can use motorways.

https://www.motorbiketraining.net/licences.htm

Northern Ireland, simmilar to Britain, but no direct access, 125cc as a learner, pass your test and your 33bhp for 2 years.

aye, its really off putting! i think the story here is you pass your test and as you dont need R plates you can for the most part get away with getting the bike restricted, get certificate then take the restriction off! bit dodgy but a 2 year wait legally!

the bro has a 1450cc harley but can ride it on a car provisional in ROI, something to do with power to weigh ratio! jammy so and so! so in theory i could buy, tax, insure etc in ROI and get away with a bigger bike but id have to have a heavy one and would restrict me to what bike i can buy Sad

duno what to do but wont be able to stay on the 125 for much longer!

complicated stuff!

Whatever you buy be careful of weight and seat height, something new and heavy as a new rider is easy to drop (easy to drop as a veteran too) and you will at some point drop a bike.

Good luck.
