In the eye's of the law the only piece of safety gear you need is a helmet. so i would say this is all you need on your test, but to be safe the rest do's help.

Officially, no.

Unofficially it depends on the tester but I am 99% certain I failed my second test because I was wearing trainers. (I had been out in the rain the day before and my un-waterproof boots were still soaked). My major was an observation (missed lifesaver) which he said was dangerous (to pull out and go round a parked wagon on an empty 40-limit road? I think not......) but I'm sure if I'd had proper footwear he would have put it down as a minor and passed me - I only had 2 other minors too. Crying or Very sad

Part of the reason I am so convinced is because I had the same tester for my 3rd test and the first thing he did was look at my feet - I passed that one although I thought my riding wasn't as good........ Rolling Eyes

So after all that waffle maybe not boots but certainly sturdy substantial footwear and don't turn up in trainers whatever you do!

If you go dressed like a serious safe biker the tester will look at this and I reckon it will help you pass.
If you wear trainers if I was a tester I wouldn't be happy, so if you can get some boots I would.
Not only that they are so much safer and wearing training you may slip and fail anyway

I didn't have my gear then so i had to wear trainers, jeans & jumper & i passed, so no i doesn't matter what you wear as long as the ridings o.k. Saying this tho it could be diffrent depending on the examinar.

no you don't all you need is a helmet that looks kind of legal.

The bloke who was doing the test before me had a barely legal helmet which would be bent with your hand , he also had no gloves.

I personally passed my test with just a helmet and gloves, I'd not recommend you buy boots near a test time since it makes your feet feel different , and may snarf your test.

Tthe training school I am with require you to wear "sturdy" boots or they won't train you, so it says in the confirmation letters they send out.

And they checked my footwear before I could go out on the CBT.

Seems generally a good impression to wear a full kit (preferrably leather, boots, and hi vis).

I'm going to go with hi vis and leather trousers next time just to get that extra impression Mr. Green.

That's if I don't mess up again.

Yeah but I bet you rode damn well on your test! Razz

for some 'unlucky' individuals like myself they might favour us more for dressing safe.

I'm guessing anyway, depends on examiner like others said.

If you have no bike boots then wear sturdy Doc martins boots or similar, i used to wear trainers on my scooter and found that they slip on wet / greasy roads.
i have waterproof Aquaboots and streetfighter 'doc martin style' boots.

I would say giving the right impression helps, when I did my test the instructor told us this chap prefers people that dress the part. I don’t know if that was true or not but out of two of us doing the test that day I passed in full kit and the chap in trainers and denim jacket failed.

What I would say though if you have good boots from day one in your training it will help you right tool for the job ext ext I know I only feel comfortable in my boots while riding and if I am in shoes or trainers for any reason it feel very unnatural.

wore trainers on my test because I had spent out £675 on the DAS and was completely skint. I wore boots (not steelies) on my first lesson and could not get used to em. My instructor knew I dont normally wear boots and said just to stick with trainers till I passed my test.

I failed aswell. Failed to leave enough space behind a wagon at a red light. Was told I need to be able to see the wagons mirrors else he cant see me. The wagon was pretty long and I wouldve needed to have been quite far back (im reckoning at LEAST 20ft because i tested this the other day but at the time it was pretty damn busy). I left about 10ft and was in the normal road position (left of centre line) which is what I had been told in my lessons. Also failed because I didnt give way to a jeep coming up hill under a narrowish bridge (I checked the other day and there isnt any give way sign so I didnt HAVE to give way but the instructor was very arsy about it.. Ive been under the same bridge hundreds of times before so I knew it was safe. Apperently on a bigger bike I wouldnt've of made it through.. I wasnt on a bigger bike though.. And you couldve probably fitted a car through the same space I had although admitidly it would be stupidly tight.

I have considered the fact that I only wore trainers was possibly one of the reasons I failed. seemes to me the examiner was looking for things to fail me on. My instructors was pretty surprised I had failed on the things I had too Sad

I have never worn 'proper' bike boots in my life and don't intend to.

I wore wellies, a wax jacket, wooly gloves and a 20 year old open face helmet I bought for a fiver at a car boot sale on my CBT (and for a considerable time afterwards).

I wore a pair of fabric trainers/boots (hit-tech trails), a wax jacket, combat trousers and a proper lid on my test.

A pair of stout leather boots will cover most circumstances. I swear by army issue combat boots, been wearing them for years. You'll get brand new ones for £50, second hand starting at a tenner.

There is no requirement whatsoever for wearing boots on your test (you could wear shorts and a t-shirt and have bare feet if you wanted, as long as you have a helmet on). It is up to the people doing your training as to if they accept you on the course or not. If they want to insist on boots, that is up to them.
