Hi, my rear wheel bearings are amongst the reason for my bike failing it's MOT. And being a cash strapped student means i'm going to attempt the work myself.

The paddock stand will get in the way, so my plan is to use the paddock stand to get it up, then to slip some axle stands under the swing arm.

The main thing i want to know is will i have to replace the dust seals? I don't know if they're the reason the old bearings failed or not, and i have no idea where to get them.

The dust seals usualy get mangled when you remove them, they are cheap so just buy a set and replace them.

When you drive the new bearings in do it in small stages "round the clock" to make sure it sits nice and square in the wheel. It's also a bad idea to hit the inner race, you can get away with a big socket on the outer race but using a drift that is made of a softer material is the best solution.

No dust seals, just some bearings. You can buy them from M&P for half the price if you know the numbers, or buy them from three cross or Mito Mondo.

Easy job if you've got a hammer, drift, selection of bits of metal for presses.

Not sure how accurate the attached piccy is as they're for 3 spokes.

Cheers guys. What does a drift consist of? Would a big lump of lead suffice. There's some on ebay at the moment for £9 for the 3-spokes, but the seller said he's 95% sure they'll fit the 6-spokes.

One tip I've found to make getting the bearings back in is to place them in the freezer for an hour or so, before their installed.

I usually use the old bearings to push the new bearings in.

Basically, push new bearing in a little, place old bearing over the top and tap lightly with a mallet.

No, too soft.

As said, use an old bolt or screwdriver to drift them out, working round the clock

Talking about the bearings themselves there? If so. Look at the ones that came out. There will be a number stamped on them. Now look in the yellow pages under 'bearing factors'. Go to a bearing factors, tell them the number (or show them the old bearing) and they will offer you a selection of two or three different makes at much cheapness. More expensive = better as a general rule. All are probably better than the original ones the factory fitted.

The new ones (if you get them from a bearing factors) will almost certainly be sealed (unlike the ones the factory fitted to the bike in a miserly attempt to save about 50p per bike produced) as such, the dust seals are somewhat superfluous.

A proper drift costs about £2.50 and makes the job a lot easier. Less prone to rounding off on the edge. You can do it with a big bolt but I find that you have to keep filing the end square or it starts slipping off.

Ordinary bearing on left, sealed bearing on right. Get sealed ones

EDIT: Remember, there is usually a third bearing in the sprocket carrier casting. If the wheel ones have gone, this wont be far behind. As well to replace it at the same time.

I've ordered a full set of sealed bearings for the rear wheel, on their way to me now. Thanks for your help guys Thumbs Up much appreciated.
