 |
|
its a Honda H100 SJ from 91 i believe
started poking the h100 tonight, in an effort to give it a bit of a going over, i've owned it for about a year and havent done much in the way of maintenance
its definately one of those situations of not knowing where to start or how much to bother spending
becoming, as ever, frustrated with the haynes manual, because it covers the whole range of h100 models, but tends to generalise between them all, neglecting to pick out specific model differences within the maintenance procedures
my basic issues are
electrical gremlins - im starting with the battery, giving it a full charge, and if it doesnt hold charge, then ive got a spare standing by, the bike electrics werent working properly when i rode it from my parents to my new place, the battery was dead, the headlight was working when the bike was running at decent revs, but the tail light and indicators were not
if it turns out to not be the battery causing this issues, where do i look next reg/rec?
air filter, ive bought a new element to cut to size, it says i need to put it in 80/90 gear oil, i've not a clue what gear oil is? where to get hold of it? or how im supposed to apply it to the filter? any advice?
i know there isnt a conventional oil filter, but i was wondering if any owners know where the any filters are that might need a clean out, i believe there is one just after the 2 stroke tank, but i was wondering if there was a filter for the gearbox oil also? if so where is it located
leaking fork seals, anyone changed the fork seals on a small capacity bike with what i imagine to be fairly simple forks, is it a job for the amateur home mechanic?
this screw

its rusted nicely to its nut, the nut is made captive by a nut shaped recess of plastic in on the other side of the airbox, im sure your familiar with the kind of thing, however when you try and undo the nut just forces its way round in the plastic recess, and there is no way to hold it in place, ive tried squeezing the airbox at this point with a pliers, but the nut still just spins with the screw
here is a photo of the main electrical black boxes on the bike, and i was wondering if people would be able to identify what the particular ones are, there are four in this pic

i left a tube off when i last took the bike apart, and now a year on i cant remember which tube goes where, basically i was hoping an owner would be able to tell me which tube is supposed to be connected to the port in the picture its just above the what is either the throttle stop screw or the pilot mix adjustment screw (not sure which is which yet)... as viewed from the right side of the bike

any feedback appreciated as always folks! ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

The H100 charging system is fairly pathetic (6V, tiny battery, etc). New battery might well help, and an old dead battery can easily cause bulbs to blow.
Think the headlight runs from a lighting circuit directly without the battery, while the other lights probably come off the battery.
if it turns out to not be the battery causing this issues, where do i look next reg/rec?

Gear oil, as in oil used in gearboxes (most cars). Halfords sell it. It is just there to catch the grit that tries to go through the airbox. Take the foam, wash it thoroughly and then put some oil on it. I tend to just use a thin smear. Squeeze the filter to get the oil to soak through.

Not sure there are any filters as standard. Certainly not in the engine. Might be an aftermarket fuel filter.

Difficult to know, but probably quite easy. Crack off bolt at bottom, take off top of fork, undo bottom bolt fully. Take off fork dust seal, remove circlip above fork oil seal. Normally then yank the forks apart (the fork bush pulls the oil seal out, hence you need to yank them apart fairly hard). Clean up, new seal, reassemble and put in correct amount of oil.

If the nut can easily be got at to replace it then use a dremel to chop the head off that bolt. Watch out for the bolt getting hot and melting the plastic. Then just use a new nut and bolt
Sorry, cannot remember which box is which (sold my H100 over 17 years ago).
All the best

Yes, direct lighting for the head and tail light. Battery power for the flashers, brake light and neutral light. Check the battery and check the main fuse. Then check the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running.
Also check the earths for the flashers and brake light.

In real life, any old oil will work. For a foam element try this: Wash the foam in soapy water and rinse it out. While it is still damp, pour an eggcup full of oil onto the foam, scrunch it up between your hands then wring it out. you will see a cloudy emulsion of oil and water drip out of the foam. Now set it aside to dry.
This evenly coats all the foam in a very light covering of oil, which is ideal.

None that I know of for the oil. It just sits in a sump, doesn't get pumped through anything to filter it.
There will be a fuel filter. If the tap has a sediment bowl, unscrew it and you will find a circular gauze filter sitting in the bit above the sediment bowl. Take this out and wash it in clean petrol.
If there is no sediment bowl, the filter is inside the tank. Lean the tank over to the right so the fuel sloshes away from the tap. Undo and remove the tap and you will see a gauze filter shaped like a 'sock' over the top of the fuel inlet spout. Wash this in clean petrol.

Never done it myself. My mate managed to do the ones on his GPZ and he is far from an experienced mechanic so I can't see you having too big a problem. It is also one of those jobs that you could easily take the whole lot to a mechanic if you get stuck, you will save on labour if you have removed the forks from the bike yourself anyway.

Drill the head off the screw, push it through, throw it away and fit a new one.

See below. I think the other one is the CDI but I'm not entirely certain. If it is connected to the ignition coil, then it is.

Pretty sure that is just an overflow pipe to dump fuel and kill the engine if the bike lands on its side. As such it has nothing attached. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Top of the exhaust header.
Inside the chrome mudguards, this happens on all small hondas with chrome mudguards, they rot through. If you get a new one (pattern ones aren't expensive) give it a good thick coat of paint on the inside surface.
Some rust on the wheel rims. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
