& thats not the boys in blue but BCF's very own Fuzz. Helped me balance my carbs today. The cat threw us a few curve balls but we bodged our way around them with a few handy plastic thingymabobs. Runs nice and smooth now!! The man really does know what he's doing  Bloody typical when it came to going for a ride it pissed down with rain 
Also mucho thanks to Fuzz's mum who provided a damn fine ham salad sanga.
We shall only mention the forgetting to turn the fuel tap back on very quietly down here

to fuzz
i have heard of balancing carbs, im guessing you make sure each piston is getting the same amount of fuel.
So does the bike feel better after its been done ?

Oo! Carb balancing!
Fuzz, don't want to trek over here and help me, do you? 
Ed, do you find it makes pulling away better? I have a feeling mine need doing because of a nasty problem of the power completely dropping off intermittently when I pull off, causing me to stall.
How hard was it then? |

Well they wern't too far out in the first place but it does seem smoother now & ticks over a little nicer. But saying that, that could be my imagination.

To be fair it wasn't that hard at all, take the tank off, remove the airbox, attach vacuum guage to the four hoses that run either side of the carbs, twiddle screws whilst the bike runs until all guages read the same. Taaaa daaaaaaaaa no problem.
Pulling away seems to be the same, but then again it wasn't a problem in the first place.

Glad it's working well for you. I actually helped someone!  There's a first for everything I suppose.
I'd never worked on an IL4 before, so it was a learning experience for me aswell. So much easier to work on than the SV in that respect.

I think that's how it works. Because it's a CV carb, the slide works on pressure, rather than by the throttle on a slide carb. As the throttle is turned, it opens the butterfly valve allowing more air to pass through the venturi. This creates a difference in pressure in the vacuum chamber and the slide rises. If a pair of carbs are not balanced, the butterfly valve opens more on one than the other, creating differening pressures above the slides and allows more fuel to flow into it than the other.

Just a thought actually. When we were balancing the carbs, the rev needle was doing some odd things. It would sit at idle speed, drop to zero, and then smoothly go up to about 8k, then repeat. Any ideas what this was? It stopped doing it once everything was put back properly.
Have you noticed it happen since?
