Only thing I've heard it in relation to is braking. Brakes can 'chatter' if there is a warped disc or when ABS kicks in.

I suppose you could call what happens with a big, single cylinder bike under hard braking 'chatter' too. When the rear tyre is barely touching the ground and skips up and down rapidly as it loses then gains traction due to engine braking.

In racing, where I presume it's more apparent, it's high frequency vibrations from the suspension due to minute problems with the setup or chassis.

I've understood it to be when the rear wheel goes over a series of small - close - bumps , a bit like when clarkson got his lap soaked driving over that corrugated surface, something definitely chattered then lol, or was that the cold water hehe

Its not to do with bumps or in the case of yamaha gp team brakes. It is essentially caused by the chassis and tyres actually having too much grip(hence it doesnt happen in the wet) This then causes a series of sympathetic vibrations(due to natural resonance points being reached) throughout the bike which destroys corner speed(the point at which grip etc is most relevant) As it is generally down to an inbuilt issue with the chasis it is very difficlt to dial it out of a bike by just changing the setup. Hope that helps a bit Cool
