The XT will be the better machine though the tyres will limit it.

When I was looking for a 125 I looked at all the new dirt bikes available, the honda looked pretty rubbish allround tbh, had the looks but I don't think it would like going off road. The XT looks as if it's built to go offroad. With better more substantial forks and a better rear shock. The honda is also a 4t which would possibly more reliable/cheaper to run for commuting, the XT's higher ride height would make it better for commuting giving you a better view ahead and over cars, also the 2t engine will produce more poke.

I think you will get bored of the XL pretty quickly,

what other bikes have you considered?
what about the aprilia MX125?
