am I right in thinking this is only a fairly 'recent' thing to be actually applied to bikes that can get there ...

I thought that when the 'busa was originally launched, the 186 top speed was only a coincidence that apparently supported a speed restriction but in fact the factories weren't actually doing it back then, only getting to the stage of talking about it ... ?

186mph is 300kph a sort of milestone speed for road bikes. the agreement between the factories was set up to make it look like they were self policing to try and keep governments from sticking their noses in.

The late 1990s saw "power wars" between various motorcycle manufacturers that culminated in Suzuki's 1300 cc GSX-1300R Hayabusa, the first production motorcycle to exceed 300 km/h (186 mph) , and Kawasaki's ZX-12R, designed to exceed 320 km/h (200 mph). Eventually a "gentlemen's agreement" was promoted by various European governments to limit production motorcycles to a maximum speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) in an effort to promote safety. Before the gentleman's agreement there was a brief period of time in 1999 when Suzuki produced a Hayabusa capable of reaching 80 mph in first gear, and 220 mph (352 km/h) off the production line. For 2006, many Japanese sportbikes have undergone more reformations and advancements, relieving some pressure from race teams to personally shower the motorcycle with aftermarket performance parts in order to increase performance and remain competitive. Although many aftermarket parts are added, a better bike off the showroom floor gives teams a more competitive bike to work with from the beginning. The Kawasaki ZX-10R, for example, is a 1000 cc sportbike capable of exceeding 100 mph in first gear, as well as a top speed at or above 186 mph without any modifications.

Hi

Came about around 2000. Forget the exact year, but just after the ZX12R came out. Early 'busa were not limited (and in theory early ZX12Rs weren't either, just not sure if m/any got sold unrestricted).

In the late 80s there was an agreement between the UK importers not to sell bikes with more than 125hp.

All the best

Keith

I'm surprised that it was so recent I was sure it was earlier than that.

Spot on. The 2000 busa was the last derestricted one. In 2001 it was limited to 186. Cool

LOL it costs £15 from e-bay and its a little item called a 'TRE', it clips into the wiring loom and its an 'Ignition Retard Eliminator' (could do with some retards on here being eliminated)

It makes the bike think its in 5th gear where the power curve is best, it kids the ECU and thus gives a full power hit in 6th ..

1st and 2nd are also mildly restricted on the latter bikes, it makes it more rideable.
I have one for mine but i'm waiting until it is fully run in before i fit it.

think yerself lucky the Germans have a gentleman's agreement such that superdupa modded £90K Audis have a top end of 155MPH , which is kind of pointless since Germans don't bat an eye lid at 200MPH+ , while the same thing in the UK would have cop helicopters after you , that said bikes can outrun choppers the fast ones anyway.

Most police choppers can only do about 150mph. Laughing

If someone has spent 40k modding an audi then I'm sure the restriction is the first thing they remove. Razz

and thats with good weather the 150MPH , good thing the cops don't buy helicopters from Kamov (boring technie bit) the contra rotating twing rotors allow it to turn on a dime and not give a damn about weather and negates the need for a tail rotor.
