About 2 weeks ago my rear end suddenly went wobbly while i was riding through crank. I checked the chain first because it was totally shagged, but it wasn't the cause. It was the bearings.

£10 got me 2 sealed bearings, luckily only one bearing in the rear wheel was buggered (the other two were fine). Two hours and some cursing, shouting, punch throwing etc. later, and i'd changed it, and cleaned the other two. But, you should see the state of the bearing i was riding on for a week. When the rear end went wobbly, half of the bearings had flown out of the races! Shocked

And for those people who blatantly seriously overtighten their axle bolt - DONT! The brake caliper bracket at the back of my bike meets the inside race of the right hand wheel bearing. Overtightening here will shag your bearings in record time!

That's exactly what happened to my Mito's rear bearings. I had to drive 20 miles home from work on it tho, that was fun. Thumbs Up

LMAO, The exact thing happened to me on friday night , Luckily I didnt have to push the bike too far from my sisters house.

I was going to make a thread but the lame quality of the pic put me off, but seing as there is already a post Ill show mine.

The bearings in red were the only ones left that were actually ball shaped, the rest were squares and tangled metal.

isnt that what torque values are for - making sure you dont overtighten things!!!

The ebay seller who i bought them off seemed pretty sure there were only 2 in the back wheel, but there were 3. I think the bearing in the foto started life as a sealed bearing, but the seals disintegrated...

One of the rear bearings I changed when I first got the planet didn't have any ball bearings left, the race had seperated completely and all balls were ground to dust.
The other side had slight play but otherwise good.
The sprocket carrier bearing was good as new. Surprised

How the fuck do you muppets manage all this crap? I've been riding on the street since '76 & have NEVER had a bearing fail like the shit you guys are pulling out of your wheels. Rolling Eyes

Blimey boys, bearings don't ever "just go", when they wear out, they wear out, gradually. You never have your back wheel in the air to check/lube the chain and turn the wheel by hand? Cos you'd have spotted this if you did. Not good boys, not good. Reckon I'd hate to see any of your swing arm bearings.

"What's that grinding noise?" --- Turn up the Ipod and keep riding

2 months later

"My wheel is wobbling all over the place!!" --- Ignore it and keep riding

1 month later

"My wheel just fell off!" --- There might possibly be a problem, i'll check it out next week.

You sure you're not missing a spacer?

Overtightening shouldn't cause a massive problem because the pressure should be against the inner races and the spacers - these should effectively form a metal tube going right through the bike from one side to the other.

Only if a spacer is missing should it be able to exert sideways pressure.

I would check this out asap.

The spacer is there i just wouldn't want to overtighten it for the risk.

They're sealed bearings imported from america. It was including P&P, too.

I never heard the bearings fail. I can't hear shit over 40 or 50 mph due to the wind, and couldn't hear funny noises below that anyway. First i knew was when the tyre suddenly went it's own way.

It was the bearings on the exhaust side, which are obscured by the calliper bracket, exhaust etc. and i'd never thought to check. The only time i've poked round there is while giving the back wheel a clean.

Including all the interal spacers?

The worst I can see overtightening doing is slightly compressing the metal or knackering the threads on the spindle; don't see how it can damage the bearings if the correct spacers are there really.

The spacers are there, i'd rather just not run the risk of over-tightening. I'm sure they're supposed to be torqued to the right ammount to stop your bearings becoming prematurely screwed.

As I said, I don't see how the two could be linked. There's other good reasons to not overtighten; but I can't see this being one of them.

Would have thought the swing arm would be a lot thinner before the bearings could possibly be damaged.

Fair enough, never realised they were so tough. Thanks for the info Thumbs Up Karma

Hi

As G says, unless you torque them up to something really stupid then overtightening the wheel spindle is not going to damage the bearing. Putting a sideways load on a ball bearing will damage it, and that is what the spacer in the middle of the wheel is there to prevent.

By the way, cannot see a way of getting wheel bearings out of the wheel without drifting them out on the inner race which is fairly certain to wreck them. If you took them out to clean them up then put them back in, expect to replace them soon.

All the best

Keith
