Bike Options <?1200 YZF750R?

Got £1200 max to spend on a bike, looking for an old sports 600/750, preferably a 750.

Been looking around and seen a few early 90's YZF750R's going around just wondering what they're like? handling, speed, maintenance wise.

or any other bikes worth looking at?

Superb bike, and when you get bored of it you can throw a 1000EXUP motor in.

I used to have one. Tizer now owns it.

Things you want to check: Exup valve operation, oil level (seem to drink it, if its not visible, se how much it takes to fill it up), ignition (these tend to wear out) I'm sure Tizer (Chuck) will fill you in on the rest.

Although I did think the bike was big in size and big in power terms, I felt completely inadequate on the thing. I didn't feel like I could learn a thing on the bike or make it go very fast to be honest!! Give it a test ride to see what you think.

Noticed about the exup valves and ignition barrel wear..

thing about these old bikes is that they're heavy compared to todays standards and generally underpowered, too.. i'll see if i can get a shot on one before i commit myself although on paper the bike seems to be the best bet for the budget.

Kev, They are wicked bikes mate! Yeah they are a little heavier than the modern bikes but still make great bikes for the road. Even the older FZRs are a good option, think you might have seen mine in action last year. They can still hold there own when in good nick. I showed many a modern 600 a clean pair of heels.
Can't go far wrong with an old Yammy, mine cost me little over half what you have to spend

I was searching around the usual CBR, ZXR, GSXR, Thundercat stuff then i came across the older YZF750's and thought oh aye't what do we have here then..

I'll probably hold off as much as i can and get a semi-tidy example although the good weather is coming in fast.

EXUP valves are expensive though eh? that's probably the biggest thing i'm concerned about.

From what I've heard and a mate of mine had a 1994 Foxeye, they're very underrated real-world performing bikes. Not too keen on a few of the paintjobs, mid-90s models even came with Ohlins.

My YZF1000R Thunderace is based on a YZF750 frame and FZR1000 engine.
In 1996 the R1 was still on the drawing boards so Yamaha used the YZF750 frame because it was the best handling frame they had.

So the YZF750 has the same frame, but it is lighter than the 1000. Therefore I can only imagine that the handing is spot on.

Don't worry about the EXUP valve, you just need to pull it out and grease it up at every service (then adjust the cables). Five minutes job.

You cant go far wrong with a YZF, good handling and fast enough to keep up with the new 750's! When you see a group of fast riders, you'll probably see at least one YZF in there with it!

As some one mentioned, after 95 they came with Ohlins rear suspension, but dont get all excited, its nothing special!

But another bike, have you looked at the ZXR750L's???

To begin with the bike wouldnt run, well it did, but like a bag of sh*te. Bottom end was Ok'ish and top end was brill but middle was nothing!
I had to get a dyno stage 7 and set up.
I did wonder if I had done the right thing, I ended up spending the best part of £400 and I nearly sold it all and went back to Original.
But when it was done and gave a proper run, it sounded the nuts....

I was under the impression that even with a dyno setup the midrange would never be the same, even if the top end and the sound are greatly improved.

Why can't aftermarket exhaust manufacturers offer systems with thier own power valves?
